Introduction
For a long time, I had wanted to buy all-in-one printer that has a fax machine, printer and copier features, but the price was quite high. In May 2008, I decided to sell B&W Brothers laser printer and shop for another printer. We went to Office Depot and saw the Epson CX9400 for $129. We wanted to buy the HP all-in-one printer, but the price was $399, so we decided to buy the Epson instead.
Before you go out there and buy one of these printer, I'd like to show you what I love about this printer and what I don't like about it.
What do I like about this printer?
- This printer is very easy to use. I thought it would be very complicated to use this printer, but I was wrong. This printer is very easy to install and to use.
- The printer uses 3 different color cartridges instead of the Tri-Color cartridges. Epson separate the Magenta, Yellow and Blue color cartridges into 3 different cartridges instead of putting everything into one color cartridge. If I run out of one color, I just have to buy the particular color cartridge that I am running out of.
- It has a fax machine! The fax machine works fine if you only need to fax less than 10 papers. If you try to put too many papers, it will not do it. You have to do it 10 at the time which is fine with me since I only own a small business. If you have a busy office that need to fax a lot of papers, don't even think of buying this printer. I can now send and receive fax from home. The fax machine is very easy to use too!
- It has a built-in memory card readers and a small color display screen! Yes, I love it! It can print photos from my digital camera without even turning my computer on! You can print photos straight from your digital camera memory card to the printer. I love the small color display, it will let you browse through the memory card to pick which photos that you want to print.
- It has a copy machine. My wife loves the fact that now we have a copy machine at home. She can copy her favorite recipes and our daughter home school materials without going to Kinko's. I can copy important documents in the comfort of our own home now. When we need to copy something, it is very convenient to have a copier at home.
- Photo printing quality is pretty good, it is not the best, but it is good. I am amazed with the quality of the photo printing that this printer prints. For the price, the quality is acceptable. I am very happy with the quality of the print especially when I use an ink jet photo paper to print photos.
What I don't like about it?
- The INK cartridges are VERY EXPENSIVE. $29 for B&W cartridge and $35 each color cartridge. The inks don't last for a long time because this printer uses a lot of ink! After 2 months of usage, I was shocked when we had to replace all of the cartridges, I paid $139 to replace 1 B&W cartridge and 3 color cartridges. The printer was only $129 and to replace the cartridges cost $139! Now I understand the catch! Cheap printer but expensive cartridges. The next time I buy one of these printers, I will research how much the cartridges cost first.
- It is not the fastest printer our there. The printing speed is in the slow side, but since it is only for home and home business use, it is fine with us.
Will I recommend this printer to my friend, family and everybody?
I am a little bit reluctant to recommend this printer to anybody because of the price of the ink cartridges, but for the features I don't mind recommending this printer to anyone. As long as you are not going to use it for too much printing work, the printer is fine. If you want to use the printer a lot, it is going to be a very expensive printer to maintain. We are happy because we now have copy and fax machine at home.
In Conclusion
The CX9400 is a great home all-in-one printer that comes with great features, but it does use a lot of ink and the cost of the ink cartridges are very expensive. Be prepared to spend a lot of money on ink cartridges when you buy one of these printers.
