Author's Review

Note: I have added more detail and info to this review.

EGM, Electronic Gaming Monthly, is by far one of the best video game magazines ever. Every month it provides detailed previews, reviews, codes, and strategies. You can't beat that. And, it also answers questions from readers and gamers. I'm going to try and breakdown the magazine, pointing out the good and bad points.

EGM is released once a month, and it always has the newest video game news. If something's happening in the video game world, EGM'll be there to tell what it is that's happening, when it's happening (in the case of a video game/tournament), and just about every other thing you need to know about it.

They offer TONS of previews for each current video game console, along with detailed information on the game and pictures to go along with it. This is often one of the best parts of the magazine, and most of the time I try to read every single preview. The only problem is, sometimes, either because they don't have enough info or for space reasons, they only offer a few paragraphs and 1-2 pictures on some of the games. This only happens, though, when the game is in its earliest stages of production, and I don't think they have enough information and pictures to fill up the normal 1-2 pages.

They also reviews many games each month, offering a few from each current video game console. In the newer issues, most reviews take up about 1/3 of the page, or a column, so, they have room for two more columns/game reviews on a page. Sometimes the reviews are shorter, usually only when a game is far below average, and one paragraph and the technical info can sum up how horrible this so-called game is. Other than that, each game is reviewed by 4 of the staff members, and they each contribute about a paragraph and their number rating for the game. It may not seem like a lot, but, these guys are professionals, and they make their reviews quick and to the point. I prefer this over some 4-page-long thing that explains each pixel of the game (SHEEEEEESHHHHH!). Also, every month there is one main game in the review section that is in the spotlight, you could say. That game will have a full-page review, which includes info on the game, pictures, and the regular 4 pieces from the staff. Oh, and also, they offer (only to the best games, of course ^_^) awards, which include silver, gold, and the coveted platinum, which is only awarded to games that receive 4 straight "10's" from the reviewers. When it all comes together, the reviews section is probably one of the best in any video game magazine.

EGM also contains a Letters and Codes section. The Letters section is usually just funny, and something interesting to read. The codes section offers TONS of tips and tricks for a wide variety of games.

The main complaint I have about this magazine is that there are just TOO MANY ADVERTISEMENTS!! Every 4 or 5 pages there are 2-5 advertisements. Sometimes even more! This can really take away from the enjoyment of the magazine, because you are constantly skipping numerous pages to get to the next part of an article.

But, overall, EGM is a great video game magazine - definitely one of the best out there.
