Author's Review
Well, I can't say I was too impressed with this game. While it has some good game qualities, I think many aspects were falling short of the Dreamcast's potential. I gotta say I've seen better.
Graphics: While the opening sequence is good, the actual game is a tad weak. Characters could have had a bit more detail, especially when talking to one another(moving lips, snarls or heavy breathing...). The intro's were also like the game characters instead of the cinematics I was expecting which was a down point for me. The crowd, while mobile, when seen at an angle (Which is common) all look like those fake cardboard cutouts and takes away from realism of the game.
Sound: Possibly the best part of the game, there are plenty of music tracks for the intro of each player and in game speech is good. Sound effects are pretty real as well. I especially like the cries of pain and the crowd's taunts and cheers.
Control: Another major problem I have with this game is some of the control. While simple moves are easy to perform,(punch, kick, etc.), other moves require difficult and sometimes frustrating button combinations. It is also difficult to pick up items such as chairs and bars to attack your opponent with. Also along the same lines, in Tag-Team mode, it is hard to turn from one opponent and face another if they gang up on you. Secondly, it's next to impossible to turn around and tag your partner! I know its
supposed to be difficult physically to get there, but the mechanics for the actual tag suck! Often I could not reach out for a tag, or punched my partner instead of tagging.
Fun Factor: While I love wrestling, I found this game to be frustrating all too often. I found the create your own wrestler option to be very well thought out and designed, the sound was good, and the multiple game modes added replay value. Sadly, however, some of my favorite parts of the game like chair bashing and spectacular moves were to hard to obtain and made the play feel like a basic kick/punch match. Personal opinion is that if
you love ECW, you might like it for a rental, but for the rest of us, don't waste your time and money.
