Ecco - everything seems to be going swimmingly
Date of Review: Nov 4, 2000
If you rate graphics over gameplay, this is a game for you. This underwater epic has been around now for quite some time, yet little has changed in the way of gameplay. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing.
The graphics however are some of the best you will ever witness. The game lends itself well to the stunning 3d graphics, pushing the Dreamcast's capabilities to the max.
Most of the Dreamcast's games seem to be adaptations of either arcade, PC or PSX classics, but this is one of the few that is exclusive to Sega. As Ecco, you must travel through time to battle a mysterious alien race known as the Foe, and then return to the paradise of a tranquil future, where human and dolphin live side by side.
The backgrounds are extremely detailed, and you will notice new things you may have missed each time you play the game. The animation is also stunningly lifelike.
There is enough content to keep you going for a while. With more than twenty levels, I was hooked for weeks. There is much variety as well, to keep you interested.
The sound effects are brilliant, and the soundtrack is not nearly as dull as many games of this kind. Possibly a bit tranquil, depending on your preferences.
Don't worry though, there are still plenty of opportunities to kick some shark butt!
Want a challenge, or just something to calm you down? This is the game for you.
