Author's Review
I have never used GPS before and today was my first try. I went in a passenger seat of my car with laptop and Earthman GPS attached to its USB port. We were able to get gps fix almost immediately after we started to move (although when car was parked, we couldnt acquire the position). This device is extremely small and yet looks sturdy. Plastic used in contruction is of good quality (which is important), also one side of the gps has thin "slices" of rubber, so gps won't slide off, if you put it on surface. Also, there's a suction cap to attach it to the windshiel. USB cord is conveniently long, and it looks like tracking could be also used from the backseat.
Tracking is very accurate (although it could be standard on all gps devices). When you zoom in to the closest detail you can see that it shows your location off the road. Maybe this is done for convenience, so you could read name of the street (your location is shown as solid green circle, and when you move it leaves a trail).
Another thing I was impressed with is that it shows car's speed and does so very accurately (almost 1:1 match with speedometer). If you went off the planned out track, you can press "back on track" button and software will recalculate your path from current location. It does not do it automatically, though. You can record your movements (gps signals) and the play them back on the map -- it will show your path, along with speed -- could be very useful, actually. The software that comes with the GPS also has voice guidence. I think it is needed only when you drive alone. It's much more convenient when you have someone with laptop next to you. Sometimes voice was late and was telling I that I have to make a turn long after I already made it.
The gui (graphical interface) of the software is attrocious. It looks really terrible and uncomfortable. Also, map drawing technology and fonts used for the software are far beyond acceptable. When you zoom in close, street lines are not smooth and look bad. On zoom in, fonts dont have outlines to stand out better and text is not well readable. On certain levels of zoom out, streets lines are very thick and black and make map look bad. I have used Microsoft Streets and Trips 2001 and their interface is amazing. Nevertheless, the ugliness of delorme's gui indicates their professionalism. Usually people who do excellent hardware just cant do nice looking software. Their street atlas usa can be get used to, although it is UGLY. I wish they invest some $ into developing nice and comfortable gui.
