Author's Review
Busta Rhymes is the breath of fresh air in the oft-stale world that is hip-hop. With "Extinction Level Event," he solidifies his spot as one of rap's superstars, impressive considering the transient nature of the industry these days. Most artists tend to bust onto the scene with a powerful debut, run out of ideas, and fade into the pop-culture dustbin in the back of our heads, but with every album Busta just keeps getting better.
While typically goofy as only Busta can be, "ELE" is also a rather dark album, with Busta predicting a global apocalypse that never fails to put you just a little bit on edge while listening. Thankfully, though, he doesn't dwell on his Nostradamus complex too long and is thus able to deliver tracks that are guaranteed to make you move.
Whether you're a fan of Busta's frenetic style or not, you've certainly got to give him points for effort. Busta speaks at a mile a minute, yet most of the time is at least approaching comprehendability (unlike his collaborator on
"Iz They Wildin Wit Us & Gettin Rowdy Wit Us," Mystikal). His verbal acrobatics are impressive enough; the fact that his rhymes are clever, intelligent, and flow perfectly make him one of the top performers today.
The problem the album has are it's collaborations. Most irritating is the brutally overplayed "What's it Gonna Be," with Janet Jackson. Forget that Janet is rather irritating herself, the beat behind it just isn't that good. The same pitfall mars Busta's collaboration with his Flipmode Squad on "Against All Odds." Considering how much Busta talks them up, you'd think he'd give them a better beat to work with. Meanwhile, his remake of "Iron Man" with Ozzy Ozborne merely comes out as self-indulgent and pointless, although it's interesting to hear just because, well, it's Ozzy and Busta.
But when Busta decides to shine, he's a 200 watt bulb (is there such a thing as a 200 watt bulb? Oh well, you get the point). "Tear Da Roof Off" and "Gimme Some More" are classic Busta and allow him to make full use of his talents. Also noteworthy are "Where We About to Take It" and "Do the Bus A Bus." If a few mistakes are what it takes to bring gems like these tracks, then it's worth it. "Extinction Level Event" is a must have for anyone who styles themself a rap afficionado, or at the very least a fan.
