Duke Nukem: Time To Thrill

by   moviebuff88 ,   Oct 13, 2005

Pros:  Graphics, gore, and much more.

Cons:  3RD person shooter!

The Bottom Line:  For Tomb raider fans, this is definetly the game for you, and a Duke fan should still love it, but its different.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

When this game first came out on PS1, I was about 13, or 14 and I was so excited I spent all of my money on this game without even renting it. At first I thought I had made a mistake, because the other DN game I had was Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown, and that was an FPS. (First person shooter) I just loved it, and I couldn't get enough of it so I bought this. Soon I started playing it, and its was a 3rd person shooter, in case you don't know that is were you don't see the hand and gun, but you actually see Duke himself, and he's running around, this makes the game less fun, and harder to control. At first it got to me, but after I was still happy to have it, because it was still a kick a$$ game.

In many ways this game is like Tomb Raider, except better because your a guy, and there is tons of gore, languge and suggestive themes. The controls are even simalair, plus there is one thing that really got to me, and made me laugh my a$$ off. There is a pay phone, and you run up to it, and press the action button, and you hear an english woman moaning, like she's having sex, and Duke says "Laura"? No it couldn't be could it?

In case you don't know Duke is a guy, who is tough as nails, and he's always ready to woop a$$. He kind of looks like Kurt Russel, and he's always wearing sunglasses. This game is also almost the same as Duke Nukem Zero Hour, the story basicly is the same. But the aleins are different.

After Duke killing all of those alien bastards in the first, (DN total meltdown) this time the aliens actually have a plan, they have been doing time travel, and there planning to kill Duke's ansestor's. After Duke having his Harley changed to a trike, he is really going to kick some alein a$$, and he's set out to find the time portal.

In this one you don't only get to fight aleins as regular Duke, but also as a cowboy, and an englishman. You start off in L.A complete with strip clubs, and much more. Then you will make it to the Wild West, and Ancient Rome. This game really is awesome, but I just wish it would have been an FPS, but its still pretty good as a 3rd person shooter. The aliens are also a little different in this one, there is still the L.A.R.D pigs, but there is also some lizard looking guys, and much more. This game is also still filled with Duke's one liners, like "come get some", and "fire in the hole a**hole". I was happy to see its still the Duke I know.

Duke also has tons of new weapons, he's still got the Pistol, machine gun, shotgun, freezethrower ect. But you can now use a crossbow, dynamite, Buffalo rifle, throwing knives and axes, plus a Flame thrower for roasting bacon. Lol!

There are also a total of 28 levels, just like in the one before, there are also some secret levels. So the levels, and weapons are 10/10, I just couldn't get enough of those awesome weapons, and there are tons of strip clubs. Don't think the stip club's are only in L.A there also in the wild west.

One big change in this game was, it is a big challange! Now don't get me wrong I like a challange, but this game is almost to much of a challange, sometimes it can be some what easy, and it can also can be harder than most of the games, I've ever played, this game is pretty much for expeirienced gamer's only if not you better get the cheats. This took me almost two months to beat! And I played it everyday, so if you want hard this is hard. The contols are still good, and Duke still moves real fast, but my god there are so many pigs, and aliens! So this will be a challange to almost anybody.

The graphics are about a 9 for PS1, but there dark and I had trouble finding powerups, and keys in some area's. But Duke himself is animated very well, and so are the monsters so bad graphics is not something to worry about in this game. No, no, definetly not. The cut scenes look great too, there just as good as Final Fantasy's, and damn thats pretty good.

The multiplayer is pretty good too, although the levels are not to great, the gameplay is, and there is still the classic Dukematche's like always. This is a good game to play with your freinds, I sure did have fun with it.

There really isn't much I don't like about this game, despite the fact its a 3rd person shooter, everything else remains in tact, and the graphics have greatly improved, so this is about a 9.8 out of 10. So I would reccomend it to any Tomb Raider fan, of Duke fan its really hard though so be ready for a challange. So yeah if your at your local video game, and trade store this is probably worth 8 bucks, there really isn't anyting to loose, so yeah go head give it a shot.
