And to think I was too busy watching Fraggle Rock to notice The Dresser

by   meagandowney ,  Sep 25, 2005
Pros: Courtenay and Finney's performances are brilliant beyond words
Cons: None, unless you're not in the mood for a "great" film
The Bottom Line: If you have at least a basic appreciation for Shakespeare, actors and the theater, this "quiet little film" will renew your faith in the craft of acting.
Review: There are very few films that can prompt a 26 year-old woman with some kind of a life to write a gushing fan mail letter to a 60-something year-old actor. But, in this case, the film in question is The Dresser (1983) and the actor is Sir ...

The Dresser - Finney and Courtenay, Awesome

by   KAR120C ,  Sep 5, 2004
Pros: Finney and Courtenay, ACTING as and ART! Fine score and cinimatography.
Cons: None for this reviewer
The Bottom Line: Easily one of the 1980's best films. Breathtaking acting by Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay.
Review: 1983's, "The Dresser" was nominated for the Motion Picture Academy's Best Picture Award. Its two lead roles were also nominated for the Best Actor award. Each were beaten out by "Terms of Endearment" and Jack Nicholson respectively. How The Dresser was ...

The Dresser (1983)

by   BrianKoller ,  Jan 20, 2000
Pros: cast, story, direction, script, characters
Cons: sometimes slow, Tom Courtenay is too campy
Review: "The Dresser" is a British production starring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay. Derived from Ronald Harwood's stage play, it has a quality script and characters with some depth. It compares favorably with most Hollywood projects, which, in...

The Forgotten Nominee '83: Order of ham, make it a double

by   mynameiskenny ,  Feb 7, 2007
Pros: It got nominated for an Oscar!
Cons: Does it really have any other identifying characteristics?
The Bottom Line: A play is not a movie, guys.
Review: Ever take a look down the list of what the Academy has nominated for Best Picture in years past? Go on. Go take a look. I think you’ll notice that unless you’re a serious movie buff with a taste for films with heavy critical praise, ...
