Akira Kurosawas YUME (Dreams) -1990 |
|||||||||
|
Pros: Everything-specifically, cinematography , performances, and I especially liked the cheerleaders for the dead
Cons: None that I can think of, unless you are looking for a Samurai flick
The Bottom Line: This is another Kurosawa masterpiece, for those of you who appreciate his genius. A beautiful, beautiful film!
Review: This is one of those movies that becomes unforgettable the minute you experience it. It is stunningly beautiful, each segment a perfect example of the great things you can do with a camera if you happen to be born an artist and a film maker, a creative...

Pros: Everything
Cons: Nothing at all
The Bottom Line: Not to be missed.
Review: Messages are aplenty in Akira Kurosawas Dreams [1990]. The movie consists of eight episodes, or dreams, with themes ranging from environment conservation to the humane side of war, the dangers of nuclear power and the ill-effects of nuclear ...

Pros: Imagery, stories, the way the "dreams" are strung together
Cons: not for everybody; it's an art film.
The Bottom Line: See this movie if you love Kurosawa and you love films, but don't if you loved i,Robot.
Review: By the time Akira Kurosawa made Dreams at the age of 79, he had revolutionized the samurai film and directed some of the best movies ever made during a career that spanned several decades. I was introduced to Kurosawa through his violent epics, films ...

Pros: Stunning visuals, conveys wonderful feeling, a painting on film
Cons: Slow, requires some knowledge of Japan, "arthouse" movie, not for everyone
The Bottom Line: A truly beautiful movie that is impossible to describe in words. However, not everyone will enjoy it. It is very avant-garde. Still, worth seeing at least once.
Review: Dreams (1990) was one of Akira Kurosawas last great films before his death in 1998. Although some consider this film a disappointment, it is truly a visual masterpiece that, in my opinion, is unequaled. Dreams is broken into eight...

Pros: Left me wide-eyed and wiped out.
Cons: Very Eastern storytelling, not for all gaijin.
Review: Sorry for the hiatus. New place and all. Thanks to everyone for kickin' it in the meaningtime.
Akira Kurosawa's "Dreams" is one of the last films that the Grand Old Man ever did. He was a dedicated, visionary human dynamo...and yet... |

Pros: sets, direction, acting
Cons: ---
Review: "Dreams" is Akira Kurosawa's final film in a long line of critically acclaimed and influential films. Martin Scorcese has a cameo as Vincent van Gogh. It is composed of 8 vignettes on different themes, from the destruction of nature to...

Pros: beautiful filmmaking, abstract, cultural, social commentary
Cons: hackneyed caveats
Review: Kurosawa is undeniably a master of cinema and directing. His "Dreams" delivers such shockingly beautiful views and ideas that it is truly a loss to have lost this remarkable artist.
"Dreams" is composed of eight vignettes,... |

Pros: High quality, intelligent
Cons: Can be plodding at times
Review: If you permit yourself to place aside conventional ideas about what a movie should be, this is a great movie. The surreal nature of the brief series of eight "dreams" are engaging. Though some are more than others. The opening Fox Wedding is...

Pros: Everything.
Cons: Nothing really, except for people who prefer jelly donuts to healthy nutrition.
Review: To me Dreams is one of the best films I have ever seen. Some people might say it is slow, but those people probably also think that the point of media is to get excited in a superficial way like eating a pound of sugar or 12 jelly donuts. This fil ...

Pros: Visually stunning, the film has some hard hitting themes.
Cons: Not a film for someone who merely wants to be entertained!
The Bottom Line: It doesn't have to be one man's dream alone!
Review: Akira Kurosawa stays firmly rooted to the position of favorite filmmaker for various reasons. Often it is his cinematic genius and the symbolism prevalent in his films. But most importantly, his films work because they transcend geographical ...
