Dr. McGillicuddy?s Vanilla Schnapps Is Good But Not Great.
Date of Review: Nov 5, 2009
The Bottom Line: Vanilla Schnapps is very average but may be worth trying.
Yes, I suppose I am on a Schnapps kick. Hey, it’s good stuff (or else mostly has been so far). In my efforts to write, to write well, to inform others and to have a good reason to drink at two in the afternoon, the newest addition to my liqueur collection is Dr. McGillicuddy’s Vanilla Schnapps.
I love vanilla, and I mean I really LOVE vanilla. The taste of vanilla, the smell of vanilla, what’s not to love? It doesn’t take much to pull me over to the Vanilla-scented and flavored Dark Side these days, so when I discovered Vanilla Schnapps, I felt pretty justified in picking myself up a bottle.
Dr. McGillicuddy’s Vanilla Schnapps comes in a 750ml clear glass bottle which is decorated with a few stickers. Information on the stickers includes things such as the name of the product (Dr. McGillicuddy’s Country Fresh Schnapps, Vanilla Schnapps Liqueur), the fact that this product is imported from Canada, a black and white picture of what one assumes to be Dr. McGillicuddy himself, glass in hand, sitting in a wooden chair beside a table that holds two Schnapps bottles and a basketful of fruit, two color photos of what looks like vanilla beans in their pods (or else ears of corn, it’s difficult to tell!), government warnings and the sticker price ($17.99).
The drink itself can be easily seen through the clear glass bottle though the beverage is clear as well. The color, or lack thereof, and the consistency, which is rather runny, give this beverage the appearance of water.
Oh, how I love the smell of vanilla, and this stuff sure does deliver! The scent of alcohol is easily detectable when one is inhaling deeply, but there can be no denying that the vanilla scent is much stronger than the alcoholic one.
When tasting the drink on its own, the first flavor to hit the back of my throat as well as my tongue is the familiar warming taste of alcohol, which is quickly followed by a burst of vanilla. The vanilla flavoring in this beverage isn’t bad; in fact, it’s rather good and is easily recognizable as such. However, it’s worth mentioning again that the alcohol flavor is the first to be noticed. The aftertaste isn’t an alcoholic one as I had expected it to be after my first sip, instead, my mouth and lips taste comfortingly of vanilla and after only having a few small sips of this stuff straight, my gums are tingling rather nicely.
Overall, this is a fairly decent drink, both on its own and when mixed in cocktails. While enjoying Dr. McGillicuddy’s Vanilla Schnapps straight, I found that it is best when served warm. This product is a 48 PROOF beverage and when used in cocktails, a chilled result may be unavoidable. Vanilla Schnapps hasn’t been my favorite flavor of so far, but it’s not the worst I’ve had either.
