Author's Review
I needed a gate I could move at any time of the day and put back later. It is between a THIN iron rail, and a wall with moulding on the bottom that juts out an inch or so. A bit complex for the average gate! This one fits the bill, and at 8 mos. pregnant I can easily install/uninstall it, and without too much trouble step over it.
Ours is at the bottom of the stairs so I step over it up to the first stair, or down from the first stair to the ground. This gate is very secure and installs using pressure. I do step over it any time I climb the stairs, and this is our life for the next few years. It's not something I'd want to remove and put back each time I climb stairs, of course, though even that would not be too hard. Since it's plastic, we feel it's safer in case someone falls down the stairs into it. We don't want people falling into a metal gate, so even though they make walk-through kinds, those look painfully hard.
To lock it in place, I use nearly all my limbs. Don't think one hand here, but it's VERY easy. I put one side of the gate flush against the very thin iron rail. Then I push with my right knee and slide the other side against the wall. Because of the "perfect fit" design, the bottom part with the moulding and the flat wall both fit tightly against the rubber. Super secure. If you have both sides with irregularities, it would not work well because just one side of the gate can adjust for moulding and such.
It's climb-proof, so they say. My 20-month-old, with shoes on, can manage to stick her toes on the small piece of plastic that juts out a bit. She has never gone over, but it wouldn't be impossible, most likely. My 3-year-old just slides himself over it headfirst. It's easy for him to do, and I'm glad because the gate is not for him, but to protect his little sister from climbing our steep staircase.
I take the gate down when the baby naps, and at night. Because we can keep moving this gate, I find it a breeze to use. My in-laws can't figure it out, but that's only because I have not taught them the knee trick yet. Just using hands, it would be more difficult to get the secure fit.
The white and clear colors are attractive and simple, and they wipe clean. I am thinking of getting another one of these gates. There is a loud snap when you lock it into place, so I hesitate about putting it too close to baby's door when she naps.
Note you cannot use a pressure mounted gate at the top of the stairs, for safety reasons.
