Dogma enlightens

by   phungus ,  Nov 13, 1999
Pros: Thought-provoking, hilarious, worth seeing many times, excellent cast
Cons: Slightly vulgar, not as funny as Smith's previous films
Review: Dogma is Kevin Smith's best work yet. I did not find it to be blasphemous at all, and I think the whole feel-good message about Christianty that this movie portrays could be what our world needs anyway!

Dogma is about 2 fallen angels, Loki...

God According to Silent Bob

by   martytdx ,  Nov 2, 2000
Pros: Great writing, good, witty take on religion
Cons: none
The Bottom Line: Kevin Smith does it again with the crowning movie in the Clerks' trilogy (of which there are 5 films - go figure).
Review: Kevin Smith is a comedic genius. He is not a clean or proper genius, but neither were any of the others who have made claim to the title. Instead, he takes a mundane situation and turns it into a brilliantly funny movie, as he has done three times ...

After Seeing The Movie, I Had To Buy The DVD!!

by   KCFemme ,  Sep 3, 2000
Pros: Characters, laughter, plot ... everything
Cons: A little too many F words
Review: With over 500 reviews written on this movie already, this movie was still good enough that I just had to add my own two cents worth to Epinions. Some people really love the movie, some people really hate it, and others just weren't sure just what to...

A Dogmatic Tale

by   dbcint ,  Aug 5, 2004
Pros: Funny, Rock, Rickman, Silent Bob
Cons: Some may find it offensive, Jay
The Bottom Line: Sometimes, movies are made with tongue clearly-in-cheek, simply for comedies sake. Dogma is one of those cases
Review: I’ve been Christian for something approaching four years now. I’m serious about my faith, and I certainly don’t take it lightly. That doesn’t mean, however, that I don’t know how to laugh at myself. ”Imagine a world where ...

Dogma--Bless This Movie

by   chad8246 ,  Dec 14, 1999
Pros: Humor, acting and dialogue
Cons: Violence and religious themes
The Bottom Line: Dogma is a thought provoking, yet humorous film. It's a bit vulgar, but if you can handle that please check it out.
Review: Sometimes good movies are not for everyone. There are great movies like Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange and Kids that just simply aren’t accessible to all people. Dogma is probably a movie that falls within those bounds. It uses...

Kevin Smith Tackles Religion Thoughtfully? Well, Dogma Cats!

by   mfunk75 , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Jul 1, 2002
Pros: Like all Kevin Smith movies it's well written, well acted, and deliciously scatalogical.
Cons: Takes a second viewing to wade through the dogmatic drivel and get to the story
The Bottom Line: A fine film that wears its heart on its sleeve. Even if you don't believe in the God that Smith does, you'll still appreciate his attempts to help you understand.
Review: The first time I saw "Dogma" I was put off by the endless explanations of Catholic… well… dogma. Director/screenwriter Kevin Smith knew that the subject matter he was tackling would go over the heads of his audience if not adequately explained (ideas...

Wonderfully Offensive Hilarity for Kevin Smith Fans

by   inkkognito ,  Dec 20, 2006
Pros: Buddy Christ, Alan Rickman, Loki's slaughter scene.
Cons: Might (well, actually WILL) offend some people.
The Bottom Line: Not for everyone, but a delight for Smith fans and those who are not easily offended.
Review: WARNING: Do not watch "Dogma" if your religious sensibilities are easily offended! I mean, come on, George Carlin as a Cardinal? Jay and Silent Bob as prophets? The 13th disciple, who was excluded from the Bible for being black? The last descendent of ...

And I thought I was the only one that thought like that!

by   MoonBeam1965 ,  Dec 8, 2000
Pros: Gut wrenching laughter that keeps you thinking well after the movie is over!
Cons: none not one not a single one and I like that!
Review: I bought this movie. I saw it once on pay per view and then I went out and bought it.
I'm hooked on this movie! I watch this movie sometimes 2-3 times in a week! I subject all of my friends to this movie! Sometimes 2-3 times a week!

Kevin Smith's Perfect Film

by   wlswarts ,  Apr 20, 2002
Pros: Funny, witty, insightful, well-acted, wonderful characters, message, themes
Cons: Insecurity of a Longer Film
The Bottom Line: A perfect film focusing on the hypocrisy of religion vs. god succeeds in being funny and intelligent.
Review: "Dogma" is a film it's difficult to not evaluate with an emotional reaction because so many people have so many feelings about religion. I think "Dogma's" tagline ought to have been "God Commandeth Thee To Lighten Up." Despite what you may have...
