Author's Review
I had purchased a 1991 Dodge Spirit V6 a couple weeks ago, mainly for my fiance to get to and from work. She and I made the decision to not let her drive the car and turn it into our secondary car, which is now our primary car since I had to sell my Regal. Compared to my Regal, I much prefer the Spirit. There are things I noticed;
Performance:
As stated, this is the V6 optional version with a 4-Speed Automatic. For those who drive or have driven Dodge Caravans, you should be aware it's the same engine and transmission. I am a gear-head, so performance is top priority to me and I take note of everything. First is the idling, rather rough to start especially when it is cold outside, but let it warm up, its fine. When you accelerate, it is quick, and by the 1991 standards, this car is capable of hitting 60mph in under 7 seconds, which even by today's standards is impressive. But doing this kind of abuse will destroy the transmission, which like the ones in the Dodge Caravan, are very weak. If you do not attempt to accelerate quickly, it will be fine. Top speed for it's age is phenomenal, this car is 100% stock, for the exception of sound parts and brakes (covered next and under handling), I was able to bury the needle in fourth gear, took some time but the PA Turnpike gives all the time you need.
Sound: Because I love to jam out when I drive, I usually replace the head units and speakers and add subwoofers into cars when I get them, but this time I waited to do so due to finances. The stock sound system I'd give about a 6 out of 10. It seems to be unable to catch any bass or any high pitches, but it is relatively clear. Thanks to the lack of options for the car model, you only have the choice of radio or radio with cassette. I had the cassette option. The cassette player is great, virtually silent as it plays the tape, but the radio, picking up a station I found to be nigh-on-impossible.
Appearance:
=(1) Interior: The interior is rather bland, but suits it's purpose. The HUD (Heads up Display), which refers to the gauges and consoles, very easy to see and read. Looking through the windshield provides enough sight to see around you, not the greatest but you can easily see what's in front of you regardless of your height, unless you a little-person, then like all cars you'll have a difficult time.
=(2) Exterior: Now the exterior I find to be amazing. I'm a fan of the old-school looks, like the 70' Mustang, 68' 'Cuda, the like. This car to me brings back that feeling of individuality, that old muscle car feel, granted it is by no means a muscle car, but you get that sensation by looking at the front. Like it's predecessors, the Aries, Lancer and the 600, it encompasses all of their exterior features to some degree into one compound sedan. More so of the Aries and 600 than the Lancer. It doesn't scream power, performance, but you just get that feeling of "maybe I shouldn't race against that car".
Handling: The handling of this beast is phenominal, mainly due in part of the fact it is a front wheel drive vehicle. The suspension is very good, not the best but it with happily take road bumps in stride. The brakes are well, less than to be desired stock, they serve their purpose very well, but not for a long period of time, about every three months, I'd advise replacing them or maintaining them. Because I'm lazy and don't want to set that kind of schedule, I just swapped them out for aftermarket brake systems. Turning is adequate, no right angle turns but still good.
Comfort: Not the greatest in my book, but comfortable enough to drive three hours bearably. After three hours you need to get out and walk around regardless of which seat you're in.
Safety: I'm a fan of airbags regardless of how hefty the vehicle is. The Spirit only has the driver side airbag, so I'm safe in the event of a crash to a degree, but I worry about the safety of my fiance regardless of how good I drive. So the lack of airbags kind of scares me. The seat belts aren't exactly strong, so that too scares me a bit, I'm in the process of taking them out and putting in aftermarket ones.
Space: There is enough space to comfortably fit four adults, although Kelly Blue Book says it can fit six. More than four it becomes really cramped and nobody has space to scratch their heads. The trunk is adequate, not going to fit a body but still a good amount of space.
