Author's Review
I would like to begin by saying that, in my opinion, there is no resource that can ever take the place of the Bible...if you are a Christian.....However, there are many wonderful resources that are available to help a Christian grow in their personal walk with the Lord, and aid them in ministering to others. For me, Discipleship Journal has become one of my favorite magazines.
Discipleship Journal is sent out on a bi-monthly basis and subscriptions run around $21.97 per year. Although I do consider this to be a little expensive, considering you only receive 6 issues a year, I find that it is well worth the price due to the high quality material that is found in it.
One of the most interesting features about this magazine is that each issue presents a new theme and is organized in such a way that it can be used for group study. There is even a Leader's Guide that outlines what articles and biblical passages to go over for each week. Some bible study questions can also be found on many of the articles. Themes they have covered in the past have included Humility, Helping New Believers Grow, Learning from the Past, and many more.
Another great feature is their DJ plus section:Ideas for More Effective Ministry. You can find some good information here on evangelism, serving, teaching, discipling, missions, and small groups.
I have also found their advertising to be very useful in informing me on new resources and books like Home Cell Group Explosion, new Bibles, and many other products for the teacher, pastor, or small group leader. Yet, it can be used for personal use as well. This magazine is not limited to just those that are in leadership, but for anyone who would like to be encouraged, challenged, and ministered to.
