Don't buy this Dirt Devil
Date of Review: Feb 19, 2001
The Bottom Line: Do not buy because it will cause you all sorts of problems with the belts breaking.
My last vacuum cleaner, which was a Hoover, lasted for about nine years. I was not too happy with it at the time, so I decided to try something new...what a mistake. I decided on the Dirt Devil mainly due to the price and the fact that it had a hose directly attached to the unit. All you had to do to use the hose was pull it out.
When I first got it home, it worked fairly well on carpets. It really picked up the dirt better than my old vacuum cleaner had. But it did not work on hard wood floors or on carpets which were not very thick. The hose attachment works ok where it can reach, but it is not very long so it can not reach far. It also keeps coming out of it's holder all of the time when I vacuum.
About two weeks after I bought this vacuum, the first belt ripped, and it has been going through belts almost every week or two since. They are very hard to change, and once you do get it on, the molding around the bottom of the cleaner is impossible to get back on correctly. They sell these belts in two packs, so obviously they are meant to break. The only thing I really like about it is that the bags that hold what is swept up are very easy to change. Aside from that, I will never buy another Dirt Devil again.
