Author's Review
I have had the unique opportunity of trying out a new vacuum. The Dirt Devil Breeze Canister Vacuum. There are several factors that make this particular vacuum interesting.
1. First off you can watch your dirt being sucked into the canister. Is this fascinating or what? I am now staring at dirt being whirled around a plastic see thru device and watching in amazement. It is sort of like slowing down to see a major car wreck. You really dont want to watch, but something keeps drawing you towards witnessing the blood and gore. Likewise, I actually get excited watching the dirt pile up. Perhaps, logically I should restrain my amusement for an empty canister. Wouldnt that be the logical way to go?
2. The Breeze has a Perma Filter that is easy to remove and clean and need not be reliant on bags to hold all the dirt particles. In fact there are actually two filters on this model. One is on the inside of the canister and one is hooked into the exhaust system so that fresh air is being released back into the room and not dirty, polluted air. Some models also utilize a HEPA filter system. Either filter system would be great for anyone with allergy or asthma in your home. It seems everyone in my house is consistently sneezing or sniveling at one time of the year, so this is a very nice feature. The one bit of advice too is to definitely clean the canister outside. This will help the allergy issues too. The filter is also easy to remove and clean with just a small shake or two.
3. The cord is about 16 foot long and more than adequate to stretch from one room into the adjacent room. There is a wrap cord peg on the base of the vacuum. It also has a small plastic release on the base, which hastens the release of the cord. I personally think an automatic cord release would be better on this model.
4. The motor on this vacuum has 12 amps of power. This allows quick clean up of most dirt on your floors and flat carpets. The nozzle heads come in two pieces. One is a brush head. This allows you to clean hardwood floors in a snap. Most of my floors are without rugs. This particular head makes quick work of all the dirt on the floor. The head also is thin enough to easily clean my bigger furniture pieces. One of the big advantages of the canister vacuum is being able to clean under the furniture. The Dirt Devil Breeze also comes with a rug cleaning head. This piece is adjustable for low and high pile carpet. I do have a tricky rug to clean in my living room that encompasses both high and low pile. I found I did need to use a little force to bear down and get all the small rug pills on its surface. The high pile carpet head is not as efficient as I would like. If you have an entire house full of high pile, you may need to go with the power of an upright vacuum.
5. The hose and the wand on the vacuum are all plastic as is the entire vacuum housing. This is a toss up. I would have preferred the hard shell bullet proof type casing on the most expensive vacuums, but this would have influence the price and the weight of this model. This model is extremely light to lift and even came with a shoulder strap attachment. I cant see myself strapping this thing on my back, but then again I could never see myself going through 48 hours of hard labor either. You never know when this will come in handy.
6. The vacuum is a very noisy machine. You cant hear yourself think when this thing gets cooking. This is one of its major issues. It will drown out anything. Phone calls, telemarketers that call during dinner or your teens love of curse laden rap music. I tried this out personally, and I can vouch for its effectiveness in this department. A positive attribute in many ways.
7. Of course it comes with on board attachments such as the standard crevice tool and small brush. The tiny brush is wonderful for cleaning drapes, quilts and other fine fabrics.
My Conclusion
I think this little vacuum is pretty good. It does its job and it has a permanent filter that will help keep your home relatively dust free. The online web site for the company is www. dirtdevil.com. They can also be found at 1-800-321-1134. I found my machine at Target. The cost was a little over one hundred dollars. Most vacuums are much more money so I think the price is adequate. If you dont want to spring for a major payment on this type of equipment, the Dirt Devil might be the answer to your low down dirt issues.
