Where I work, we shred a lot and I do mean a lot. Anything from old patient charts to Cds and DVDs. Anything that can contain information about a person on it gets shredded. For that task we the Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder. We have three of these in various parts of the building and personal shredders in offices that aren’t near one of Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder.
This is one monster of a machine. It weighs 124 pounds and isn’t easily lifted, but it d does have castors on it for ease of moving from one place to another. One person can do it by themselves. The footprint of the Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder is “Dimensions (D x W x H) 18 1/2 x 21 x 36 1/2 inches,” with a 12 inch throat for maximum shredding.
The Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder has a photo cell eye that automatically turns on when paper is inserted and turns off when the shredding is complete. This is a strip shredder that cuts the paper or anything else into ¼ inch strips. They state that you can shred up to 25 sheets of paper with this machine. It can handle more than that, I’m not sure, but I have stuffed this thing full. I just remove the metal from charts and start shredding and it does a great job.
There is a reverse on the Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder so if it gets stuffed too full, it will shut off and you can reverse and take some of the paper out. There is also a sensor that lets you know when the shredder is full. You unplug and open the front door and the bag holder slides out and you remove the rubber ring that holds the bag and add another bag, this time putting the rubber ring around the bag and shut the door.
This machine will shred 30 feet of paper per minute. What’s nice is you can keep shoving paper in and you don’t have to be all day doing it. All of us have a certain waste can that we place papers in to be shredded and we have to use the Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder several times per day. Just be careful or you could loose a finger. The teeth of the Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder are very sharp and show no signs of dulling. The will cut through plastic, staples, paperclips and never know it has had a workout that’s because it has a 1 horsepower motor that keeps on and on no matter what we do to it.
The Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder states that its quiet. I don’t believe that at all, you can hear it all over the clerical pool or as we affectionately call it Cellblock C.
We have been using the Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder for over three years and have not had to have it serviced. We have had to dig out some of those rather sticky labels, but that wasn’t too bad. Just make sure you unplug from the electrical source before attempting anything more than just shredding or you might end up with a few fingers shorter than when they started. Make sure your ID isn’t near or it will be scarfed up into the throat, chewed and swallowed and the whole time this is happening, you are trying to figure out how to get out of the mess that you are in. (This has happened with a former employee.)
Even though the Destroyit 3103 Strip Cut Shredder runs about $1,400 a piece, they are well worth the money, especially if your office does a lot of shredding, like ours. I don’t know how we ever made it in the past without this. It is a one of the better things that our office spent money on.
