Author's Review
One of the key products of the Desert Essence company is its deodorants, with tea tree oil as its essential ingredient. Desert Essence has a small range of personal hygiene products (including dental floss and mouthwash) which promote the presence of tea tree oil, an essence with a very nice scent that also has anti-bacterial properties.
A deodorant with tea tree oil as its base ingredient makes sense chemically. Body odor is blamed on perspiration, but the odor is actually the product of bacteria that comes in contact with the perspiration. Anti-perspirants are generally not a great idea. Your body perspires in order to regulate its temperature and you know what they say about fooling with Ma Nature. Anti-perspirants can trap impurities in the skin with uncomfortable and hideous results, in extreme cases.
A review of a deodorant boils down to one's personal experience of the product, and since everybody's body is unique, one's experience will also be unique.
The first time I tried this product, I was initially wary. Running the roll-on on my palm, it felt surprisingly watery and was worried that it would be runny. Somehow, on my body, it goes on feeling dry but without dehydrating my skin. Others might find it runny, but the same-quality formulation is available in stick form. The formula left my skin feeling cleansed and fresh, with the very cool familiar scent of tea tree oil. I found its deodorizing strength to be very long-lasting, even with athletic activity. It worked quite well for me and since I have been very unhappy with the familiar commercial deodorants, this became my favorite for years, despite its high price: typically approaching six dollars.
Lately, I have found it difficult to find this fine product. Orders might be available through the company's website, but I have purchased it at Whole Foods and similar health-food supermarkets.
