Denon AVR-3805 Receiver

Date of Review: Apr 26, 2005

The Bottom Line:  If you are willing to put in the time and the effort, it is well worth it. An excellent home theater receiver.
I have had this Denon AVR-3805 receiver for several full months now, and I can honestly say that it is an excellent receiver. It has great sound quality, is very versatile, and also has a very good build quality, meaning it's chassis has a very sturdy and solid feel to it. It should last the dedicated home theater entertainment system fan a long time and provide him and his family much enjoyment for many years to come. Although the manual is long, and at times complex, and it will probably take a while to read and to digest it in order to fully learn how to use the receiver's many capabilities, that is only what is to be expected from such a deep, complex, and capable machine. And if a simpler product is needed, then one should buy a cheaper one, although then the product would not be as good in terms of sound quality. The AVR-3805 has garnered good reviews all over the Internet, including some from some of the top professional consumer hifi electronics websites on the Internet, and I can also say fully from my own personal experience with it, that most of the reviewers are correct in saying that it is an excellent machine. In trying to give you a fair overall impression of it, I can honestly say that I have tried to be open and honest in my review, and even though I have not gone into too many details about it, namely because this receiver has so many specific features and highlights and much has been said already by so many other people on the Internet that I fear that it would be redundant, suffice it to say that as many others have said before me, that it is an excellent receiver overall. I usually do not post reviews, but I have noticed a disturbing trend with many of the reviews of home theater electronics over the Internet however, and that is there seems to be a disturbing trend by many consumer reviewers towards deliberately posting bad reviews and trying to downgrade products from Asian companies in particular, especially about individual products that have usually gotten a high rating by professional reviewers and also have received high remarks by regular consumers. There also seems to be an attempt to downgrade products from companies that are usually very highly regarded in the industry, such as Denon or Sony. These comments are usually very cunningly disguised as objective reviews and critiques but then oftentimes expose themselves as to what they truly are and as to what their true intentions are because afterwards they are usually capped off by some suspicious screenname such as "Woody" or some other name similar to it. The comments are also sometimes very cleverly veiled with an offsetting comment or a covering comment that obscures it in order so that people do not openly figure out what they are trying ti do so that the posters won't be caught or punished, and so that they can trick people into thinking that their comment is a genuine opinion, or in the best case scenario genuine fact, and convince people of whatever they want. Also, some of the posts have very suspicious comments in them that don't sound genuine, such as a quote that I read on another Internet review website commenting about the very highly regarded Denon DVD-3910 that said "what's (chairman of Denon) going to come up with next, a $5000 DVD player that weighs 40 lbs. and plays like a $50 dollar DVD player from China?" ?huh?! What high quality, expensive DVD player plays like a $50 dollar DVD player from China? That type of comment seems kind of suspicious to me. That poster of that comment did not genuinely seem to have a good or honest motivation to say what he did, or in the right spirit. The only purpose he seemed to have was to downgrade the product after so many other consumer reviewers had praised it so highly previously. The way that you can tell some of these types of comments from the other comments is that many of the comments are so maliciously negative--the comments don't even seem to attempt to be fair or measure the product according to objective criteria, but just seem to be designed to degrade everything and tear it down and because many of the comments are so blatantly wrong according to the spirit of right judgment. The comments sound more like bold-faced manipulations than fair or objective comments, and so then I have learned from these types of comments not to trust or to believe everything that I read on the Internet automatically, especially what I read on these Internet review websites, which are merely just opinion. And so I advise you to take some of these negative comments that you read on the Internet, (and even some of the positive ones), with a grain of salt, because there is obviously a racial motive involved in some of these comments, and so oftentimes people have some other motive in mind in saying in saying some of these things other than telling the "truth" . In my own opinion about products, I try to be fair and to not to be prejudiced for or against anyone when I judge, and then that will help me to do what's right and judge rightly and to also see the truth more clearly, that enables me to have a clear, balanced, viewpoint on reality and also prevents me from making a lot of mistakes in life. This is especially important, I feel, when I am doing this kind of stuff and giving other people opinions in order to try to help other people to form a fair, honest, balanced, and accurate viewpoint about something for themselves. I also try to judge each product as it is individually on its own merits--although the reputation of the company, its "good name" does count to me as well, I find that in the end in terms of actual real-life dealings, that it is the individual product that's important and not necessarily its name. I find it disturbing that, while looking at the consumer reviews of certain products on many Internet opinion websites, that I have begun noticing these types of comments that I mentioned before more and more with the people who are posting trying to pass them off as their genuine "opinion". Some of these people are "trolls", predatory people who post malicious comments posing as others just in order to trick people into doing what they want and believing whatever they want them to believe. These people obviously have some other agenda on their minds than giving a fair, decent, and impartial, view of the situation. This kind of peeves me, as I am not going to spend $1200 dollars (!!!) of my hard-earned money on a product that only seemed better than it really was because some guy wanted to promote his own racial or national agenda, and possibly miss out on the product that is really good just because I was fooled into thinking that it was bad just because someone made a false post about it just to hurt other people. These people are warping my sense of reality and leading me into bad decisions. I mean if the American company's product is good, then fine, I'll buy the American one, of course I have no problem with that, but if the Asian or other foreign company's product is good, then fine I'll buy that one also. And don't these people understand, if each dollar is a vote, then by buying the company's product that is a genuinely good product, then you are voting for the company and giving a yes to the company's direction, you are rewarding the company that produces a genuinely good product and urging them to produce more of the same quality product and to continue to do the same great work. And also, by not buying the products of companies that have worse products, then you are spurring the companies whose products are not as popular with consumers and so don't have as many sales to change their ways and to improve the products that they make so that people will want to buy them and so that they become more popular with customers and learn to make more money by satisfying the customers in a good way. Bottom line, it makes it better for everyone and customers win. Yes, I believe that patriotism is good, but only to the point where it does not become destructive to others, and not when you begin openly wronging other people like I am starting to see happen more and more on the Internet. I mean, forgive me for going off on a soapbox like this for a while, but it just makes it one step harder for me to see the truth as to which is the better product that I should buy when other people are making false and misleading posts like that for their own objectives, especially when I am going to make a big-money purchase that is over several hundred dollars at least, and then I have to go back and forth visiting all of these different review websites, and then I have to make a decision. To be almost sure but not quite sure, because of a few bad reviews here or there, some of which you suspect might or might not be false, is agonizing, especially over a purchase that costs a lot of money, because you want to make sure you make the right decision. This is hard even for a product that you know is reasonably good because most people have given good reviews about it, much less for a product in a category in which there is no clear favorite. And although it is wrong to assume that other people are making false posts for the purpose of trying to manipulate other people for their own selfish reasons without really knowing for sure, and to possibly risk becoming cynical, some of the behavior that I have seen on the Internet has made me suspicious, and you see more and more of it lately, so I hope that you are cautious and that you take my advice for what it's worth. And for those of you who think that I am just defending the Denon AVR-3805, then I suggest that you look at the reviews of it on the Internet, I think that if you use that reasoning, that a lot of people are defending the Denon AVR-3805. Besides, I am not so much quite defending Denon or even the AVR-3805, as I am defending anyone who does a good quality job, does it well, and is proven to be a creative innovator, and my right to make a quality, informed, accurate decision, without anyone trying to trick me into his or her own objectives. This particular receiver, the AVR-3805 got good reviews all over the Internet, both from professional reviewers and from individual consumers all over the Internet. I mean as for my part, although I own it, I am not attached to it, and it stands on its own merits. I mean what more can I say, I don't need to defend the Denon, I think the reviews speak for themselves. The proof is in the pudding,as they say. But my advice for any of you out there who are seriously looking for any advice and any help on hifi consumer electronics products is to visit the many excellent websites there are on the Internet. There are several good websites along with this one that would help you greatly, such as "audioreview.com", and also "ecoustics.com". Ecoustics in particular has an excellent compilation of professional reviews from all over the Web as well as a listing of a particular product's rating that was given from several consumer review websites and links to those websites as well. You might even want to try professional hifi magazines' websites such as"hometheaterhifi.com", "stereophile.com", and "theperfectvision.com", just to name a few. They oftentimes have reviews of different home theater components that they've evaluated in the past posted on their websites that are free for the general public to do research on and to browse through. Though, in order to find out what what they thought were the best components in each specific category for that particular year, you might have to pay a little extra money in order to download their Best of…(insert the year that you want here)" lists onto your hard drive and to be able to open them up and to read what they say, since that is how they usually distribute their lists. And although most of these magazine's editors oftentimes do not have the luxury of using a product for a long period of time such as several months, these reviewers are usually experts in their field, and they oftentimes have seen and reviewed many different products of several competing companies, so they might be able to have a better chance at telling you just which product happens to be the best product in its particular category. You might even want to try audio/video hifi forums and message boards on the Internet in order to ask people there advice about certain particular products. One of the most famous is the AVS Forum at "avsforum.com", an excellent audio/video forum, one of the largest ones on the Internet, where the people are passionate about the subject, knowledgable, and very informed, though not always helpful or friendly, especially towards beginners, although you can learn a lot just by observing and listening. Though as always, I'd suggest that you remember that, as knowledgable as some of those people are, their responses are just opinions, and that you should be cautious and take their opinions with a grain of salt. Do your research before you buy, and preferably if you can and if the option is available to you, do some good old–fashioned legwork as well as your homework, and go into a store, look at the product that you are interested in, if it's possible listen to what it sounds like, and as always, try to "try before you buy" before you bring it home, especially if it is an expensive purchase. It is always best to gain your own personal experience with a subject before you pronounce judgment on it regardless of what other people might say, that will oftentimes prevent you from making a mistake, and try to buy from a retail store or a mail-order company with a good return policy, so that if you do make a mistake, it can easily be rectified, even if that means that you might have to pay a little more to buy from a reputable dealer with a tolerant return policy. That will give you great peace-of-mind and save you from a lot of heartache in life. These are the lessons that I have learned in all of my many years of buying audio/video equipment, believe me I have learned these lessons from many many mistakes over the years and oftentimes at high price, so be wise and learn these lessons from me for free before you suffer any more pain in your life. Experience is always a hard teacher because she gives the pain first and then the lesson afterwards, but if you follow this hardearned and tried-and-true advice in life, then you might just be able to gain all the benefits of experience without all of the suffering and all of the hardships that wisdom uses to teach you. Well, I hope my review has been helpful to all of you people seeking audio/video advice, may you all make wise decisions. Good luck to all of you.
