An asset to the kitchen
Date of Review: Aug 10, 2002
The Bottom Line: Glad to have this as part of my kitchen tool kit. It works really well and adds a new dimension to my cooking
This is a good kitchen tool. I'm glad I bought it but I must admit I'm just learning what to cook and not cook in it. Being vegetarian I really wanted to make deep fried tofu but learned you need to use the kind that's extra firm or you need to dry it out well before hand to get it to be crispy.
Overall I really like this appliance. The oil gets good and hot and the see-though lid lets you get a peek at how things are cooking. I noticed that when I cooked vegetables that had more moisture (like eggplant and mushrooms) the window fogged up. I think the issue there is that these are not good vegetables to cook in a deep fryer (too much water in them). Other things like the firm tofu and eggrolls cooked great and the window did not fog up.
The timer is a real asset - it does the countdown for you and lets you know when the food is ready so you don't keep opening it up and fooling with it.
The rotating basket is a plus - it cooks the food evenly and seems to make it so its less greasy.
It's well made, very solid, parts are not at all cheap feeling. Clean up is easy with the spout that drains the oil.
I like it and am happy with its performance and love the fact that my kitchen isn't all splattered with oil droplets like it is when I try to deep fry in the wok or other stovetop pots.
