Author's Review
Keeping an ADHD child busy for hours is a difficult task to accomplish, but somehow I have found a way. Ok, the credit doesn't go to me, it goes to my mother. She had one of these word search magazines laying around and my son was bored. So she got it out and didn't hear from him in quite a while.
Dell makes quite a few word and puzzles game books. They have crosswords, logic puzzles, and my son's favorites, word searches. He and I have done several of the harder puzzles together which includes series of random numbers. Do you realize just how difficult it can be to find 1657849 in a 30X70 grid of random number?! It took us almost two hours to finish that puzzle, but it was worth it. As a mom of an 11 year old boy, middle child, with two sisters, and Attention Deficit to top it off, I don't usually get to spend much quality time with him.
The puzzles in the word search book range from easy (which could be 4-6 letter words in a 10X10 grid) to extremely difficult like I described before. All of my kids like doing puzzles of one sort or another, but they do all enjoy the word searches that Dell provides on a regular basis. Oh, and in case I didn't mention it, these word search books aren't just fun for kids, they also provide some nice quiet time for adults too. :-)
Most of the puzzles that are not "random" have some sort of theme to them. So for kids you can also get them thinking. Themes range from "seashore" to "cooking ingredients" and other interesting topics.
Now if you have a really hard puzzle and you just can't find the word/sequence, you can always cheat. They have the completed puzzles in the back of the book.
Dell Word Searches are usually very easy to find. All the major stores tend to carry them, including Walmart, KMart, and even most of your grocery stores if they carry a magazine selection. And if you are on your way out of town, you can usually find them at truck stops and gas stations too.
These books are great for long trips in the car, rainy afternoons, or for right before bed. As a bonus, he's even gotten better at his spelling. So if you are looking for some cheap entertainment that can last for hours (and you can pick it up and put it down at will), then try out some of the Dell Word Search books.
