Author's Review
I AM a computer geek and I constantly upgrade my laptop here at work. I work in a computer software test lab. In the past 4 years I've used at least 10. Of course, I get ones that are better and better, so this one is the best I've had. In my department we get laptops that are used so that's why I've gone through so many. As the people who use them heavily get the new ones they 'get rid' of their old one. We get the 'older' ones then they are surplused out of the company when we are done with them. Some of my other laptops have included Micron, several IBM thinkpads (the best of which was a 570), Toshiba, Sony Vaio Z505HS, Dell Latitude CPxH, CPxJ, C600, and now the C610.
All my previous machines were just toys until this one came along.
What this one has that they lacked:
*CD burner/DVD reader (24X12X24, 12X)
*SXGA screen - resolution=1400X1050
*onboard ethernet
*onboard wireless 802.11b
*long-lasting battery (3600mV)
*Resume from Standby is quick - only seconds.
What's generally good about this one:
*No noticable learning curve using this keyboard from desktop keyboard
*Great software support. I use both Linux and Windows XP and all hardware is recognized and supported.
*Durable. I pack this baby from work to home every day. It's been tossed around like a bag of dirty laundry.
*compatable with my C/Dock II
What would be nice:
*USB 2.0
*More than a single USB port
*A little thinner (I know you can do it, Dell)
NOTE: I did upgrade the stock 20GB hard drive as it gradually started to sound like an old SCSI drive about to die making that whirling sound of worn bearings. But, other than the noise it was a fast drive. BTW, it was an IBM Travelstar.
I haven't really used Tech Support services on this one, but I have used Dell support for other things before and I've had some great experiences and some horrible experiences. I think it just the luck of the draw.
