Product Review

Cheap but cheap

by   saadhusain ,   May 19, 2009

Pros:  Good specs, needed to run Vista.  Webcam runs well without a lot of overhead.

Cons:  Poor design, Vista sucks.

The Bottom Line:  I think the studio is a better buy.  Or go for HP.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I am a software developer and have extensive experience with laptops and servers.  This is my personal laptop and purchased it in June 2008 (a year ago).  Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 GHz Speed, 3 GB Memory, 160 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive, Webcam, DVD WR.

I have purchased several Dell Inspiron and thought this was a good buy.  I previously had Inspiron 1505 which served me greatly until my son dropped it from a table.

Dell's forum is useful as you can find lots of useful information there.
Dell's support is useless.  When the system was overheating, they had me removing services and reinstalling when it was very obvious what the problem was.  What a waste of time.

Pros:  Good price.

Cons:
1. Speakers are not loud enough.  Can not hear the words on some youtube videos.
2. Overheats easily.  When the cpu starts running 50-100%, overheats and system shuts down, losing all unsaved work.
3. Touchpad is not as good as before.
4. I like the volume keys in front.  They don't seem to work well in the back.
5. Hard to install XP as drivers are not easily found.
6. Glossy screen is useless outdoors.
7. Battery died after less than one year.

The top two cons are a deal breaker for me and am looking to sell this laptop.

I liked my Dell 1505 and found it to be very stable for Win XP but found its memory of 512 MB and 60 GB hard drive limited.  But I liked the front mounted media controls and the touchpad.
