I bought a Dell a940 Printer along with a Dell Dimension Desktop Computer approximately a year ago. The Printer cost me 110 dollars in addition to what I paid for the Computer. My 110 dollars was well spent, as I have been very satisfied with this printer.
First off, This Printer is considered an " All in one Printer " meaning it handles multiple functions such as printing, faxing, xeroxing, and scanning. Basically you have one machine that does everything, which saves on space as well as money. This is not a laser ink jet printer, but it does print quickly considering it's regular ink jet printer.
This Printer is moderately sized ( 14 " long, 17 " wide 8 " high ), but again, since it does so many functions you won't need a scanner, xerox, or fax machine anymore. The a940 is also very easy to use. The LCD screen, and all the buttons are very straightforward. There are only a few buttons ( 15 ) and they are all labeled and self-explanatory.
The Quality of the Printing is Excellent. The printed pages always turn out very clearly. There are different settings you can set the Print Quality to. When you are just making a copy of something for yourself, you can do a quick print which uses less ink. When you are Printing something such as a legal document, you can use a higher quality setting which uses more ink, but in return makes the print very dark. I also recommend using a higher quality ink setting when you are printing out photos.
Speaking of Photos, This printer prints out nice colorful pictures. This is great if you want to print out a photo from time to time, however if you want to print out 100 pictures from a vacation, I recommend going to a walmart or online photo store. By the time you pay for the ink and paper, it's cheaper to have a company print your pictures. Also, Photo stores use printers that cost 100,000 to print their photos, so the quality of your prints is usually better at a photo store.
You can also use this printer to xerox pages. I love this feature because I never have to run to the library or staples anymore to make quick copies. I also can Scan documents or pictures into the computer with this printer. The scanning function is fine, but to be honest I have had other scanners that scan a little sharper with better quality, but considering I only scan a few things into my computer a year, it's not a big deal to me.
The only annoying thing about this Printer is you have to buy the ink cartridges from Dell. This printer takes both color and black and white cartridges. The printer warns you when you are getting low on ink, so you usually have plenty of time to order some more. I keep a spare set of cartridges on hand just in case of a printing emergency.
If you do run into a problem with your printer, just call Dell computer up. They are very good at working with you until your problem is resolved. It may take an hour to clear up your problem, but in the end it will be resolved.
Overall, This is a great printer for the price. It's simple and uncomplicated and even a computer novice can feel comfortable using it. It's great for your kids as well as grandma or grandpa. The quality of the printing is excellent, and being able to xerox or fax from your home is a great bonus.
