Good Experience with new printer / fax / copier / scanner
Date of Review: Jan 29, 2007
The Bottom Line: A really good buy for an all-in-one.
I've never had a home copier, scanner or Fax machine before. So, my experience makes my impressions a little off.
I've copied one page to test it out. The print quality of the copy compares very favorably with the original Dell packing slip I copied. It uses a 1200 DPI scanner and the copy was quite good. I'll try some sheets for you and let you compare.
The scanner is great. I scanned old photos all weekend. I did a very good job. I ended up reducing the quality down to 150 DPI for most of the old pictures because the scanner was creating too large a file. I really like the scanner!
I faxed a sample to my work fax yesterday and picked it up this morning. It worked fine. I like the feature that I can use my home number and let the fax answer on the 5th ring. That way the answer machine picks up on the 4th ring. If I want to receive a fax, push one OFF button on the answer machine and I starting getting faxes. When I'm finishing faxing, turn the answer machine back ON. Saves me the cost of an extra phone line.
I also used the printer as "fax" machine and was able to send a WordPad document via Windows and via the hook up with no problem. Phone line to Fax (copier); jumper line to modem; jumper line to telephone. Three cords.
The ink comes in black and three-color only from Dell. That is the catch. You have to buy you ink from Dell. I bought a high-capacity black and high-capacity color ink cartridge for about $55. We have one of these 946 machines at work and my printer guy has had any problems.
BTW, I didn't load the Dell software. I used the Windows Vista software to provide all the drivers and functions.
