I'd Rather Eat A Stick Of Butter...

Date of Review: Oct 18, 2000

Don't Try To Butter Me Up?

I don't know why I keep doing this to myself. I've had nothing but bad experiences with DeKuyper's schnapps, the kind of experiences that have inspired self-induced vomiting to save to dignity and stomach lining. But for some reason I thought things might be different, that their Butter Shots Butterscotch Schnapps might be a more sophisticated product, something that I could really enjoy.

I know, stupid move. What I find what the same old garbage, liquid cane sugar tinted with artificial colors and spiked with alcohol. Man I'd love to get my hands on that DeKuyper guy!

Why do I hate DeKuyper's Butter Shots so much? Read on and learn:

The Story on DeKuyper

According to national research and market data, DeKuyper in the number one producer of flavored schnapps in the US today. From it's traditional Peachtree and Cinnamon schnapps to more recent additions like the Pucker line, gallons of this syrupy sweet slop are served nightly in bars nationwide, with sales increasing 378% on Ladies Night. While sales did sag in the 80's, DeKuyper's recent rollout of new schnapps flavors and a more youth-oriented marketing design have led to a huge return in market share.

In my personal opinion that's like being voted the most personable on Cellblock B, but some people might be impressed by that figure.

Tasting Notes

Butter Shots comes with a warning, and that's the smell coming off of an open bottle. Clingy, thick and sweet, the nose reminds me of Werther's Originals, except that there's also a slightly toasted element to it as well.

The taste follows the nose loyally. It's thick on the palate and horrifyingly sweet, the kind of overpowering sugary goo that makes your teeth hurt and your hands shake like Dean Martin after 3 hours sober. The taste is very much like a Werther's Original, only sweeter and with that slightly smokey quality that I found in the nose.

I don't know how else to express how intolerably sweet Butter Shots are, except to tell you that the second shot set off my gag reflex.

How To Serve

Schnapps are schnapps, and they're generally meant to be shot these days. I think the instructions on that are fairly self-explanatory.

I did find one recipe that actually did sound like it might be worthwhile, thanks to the Webtender:

Ingredients:
3/4 oz Butterscotch schnapps
3/4 oz Coffee liqueur
5 oz Hot chocolate
Whipped cream

To Prepare:
Mix all liquid ingredients together, then garnish with whipped cream. For an extra touch of class, add a spring of mint or a slice of orange zest.

Pricing & Availability

I hate to be preachy and elitist, but I have to be honest with you readers; in the world of alcohol you get what you pay for. Cheap booze tastes like cheap booze, and no artificial sweeteners or colors can mask that for long. At $8-10 a bottle depending on your location, this really is a bargain. Unfortunately it tastes like a bargain, which in my book means that it's no deal at all.

As for availability, the presence of at least half a dozen DeKuyper's bottles at a bar is a foregone conclusion, and Butter Shots are one of the more ubiquitous of flavors. As for package stores, there's not one in this country that doesn't have almost an entire shelf devoted to the stuff?

A Digression on Sugar Booze

And while I have this soapbox to stand on, and since it is germane to my low rating of this product, I would like to make a general plea to all drinkers: Stop Buying Sweet Garbage. Alcohol is not candy, it's something sophisticated that people should respect and exercise caution and class when using. Super-sweet liqueurs not only attract children to drinking, but they also cause a great deal of out-of-control drunkenness due to the fact that sugar masks the burn of alcohol.

The Final Verdict

I think that I've been pretty clear already about my opinion on DeKuyper's Butter Shots Butterscotch Schnapps. This stuff is an odious concoction that appeals to the worst in people, that horrific childhood addiction to everything sweet and syrupy. I highly recommend that you avoid it at all costs, you can get a better effect out of a stick of butter soaked in vodka?
