Author's Review
One summer evening, Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood) was looking through his telescope with the rest of the class, and didn't know what one star cluster was. Neither did his teacher, so they took a picture and sent it to Dr. Marcus Wolf.
Wolf figures out that it is a comet and a large one (larger than Mount Everest) and it could be on a collision course with Earth. He leaves his observatory to tell the world and he is killed in a car crash on the way there.
One year later, up and coming news reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) is given a story to find out about former secretary Rittenhouse's wife is doing. He supposedly resigned because his wife was sick and in the hospital. Jenny comes across Ellie, thinking he was having an affair with a woman by that name and told he tells her now that she has the biggest story in history. Jenny is dumbfounded, and thought that this guy had a super ego. Just because of the affair? Biggest story in history?
While driving home, the FBI finds her on the highway. She has to pull over and they take her to talk to the president, played by Morgan Freeman. She doesn't know their Ellie is E.L.E. which stands for Extinction Level Event. The president was going to wait another two weeks until the budget was out to break the story to the nation. However, since Jenny knew about E.L.E. (later that night at her compute she figured out it was E.L.E) he decided to address the nation in two days. She has to keep silent, and he promised her second row center at the press conference.
The news is out now to the world that a comet, Wolf-Biederman might be striking the Earth the next year. However, they have plans to beat the comet. They have been building the Messiah. Which is a team of six astronauts that are to destroy the comet. However, a back-up idea was thought of. If worse came to worse, they had been building an under-ground cave in Missouri. It could hold one million people. 200,000 were pre-selected and the other 800,000 were randomly selected through a lottery from their social security numbers. However, no men or women over 50 were included in the lottery.
Sadly, the Messiah failed. The comet was split into two. One fairly small, which became known as Biederman and the other which was Wolf. What can everyone do to save the rest of the world?? I don't want to tell too much more and ruin the movie for those of you that haven't seen it and are interested.
It shows love between a father and daughter. Jenny Lerner and her father, Jason Lerner (Maximilian Schell) They had their problems through out the movie. She told him that she was an orphan and he came down one day to her office with proof that she wasn't.
The love that young Leo had for his girlfriend Sarah Hotchner (Leelee Sobieksi) He was the famous Leo Biederman and his family was pre-selected. He talked to national security and if Sarah and Leo got married, they could all go. Both of the families.
This was a great movie. It really makes you think about what's important to you, and what would you do. It's really easy to take things for granted, such as the Earth. Although it's sad, it's still a really good movie, and if you haven't seen it, i recommend next time you are in the video store pick it up. :)
