Author's Review
I'm a longtime fan of Dave Barry's syndicated humor column(I'm a certified "alert reader"), and his books are even better because they're jam-packed with hilarity. His travel-related books are probably my favorites, and "Dave Barry Does Japan" is no exception.
On his publisher-sponsored trip to Japan, Dave explored topics such as the traditional Japanese arts (theatre, tea ceremonies, bowing) as well as more modern ideas (business, rock music). He begins the book with a long introduction explaining the mentality he has concerning Japan based on the television shows he watched growing up. His descriptions of situations he faced as a tourist are hilarious, especially in dealing with the language barrier. I laugh out loud every time I read it.
Dave also makes some really insightful revelations, which I think is the mark of a good humor writer- he knows when to stop being funny for a moment and point out something based on "actual facts", as he calls them. He devotes an entire chapter to the seriousness of the bombing of Hiroshima, and also makes some great observations about the youth of Japan in their attempts to rebel against a society based in conformity.
I also highly recommend "Dave Barry's Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need", in which he covers all 50 states, most of Europe, and several other countries.
