Author's Review

After the incredible success of Thriller Michael Jackson released the long-anticipated album Bad in 1987. Though, it didn't break the record of his predecessor, but it did very well around the world and proved again that the King was still where he is to be - on the throne. Dangerous, released in 1991, was another highlight hitting the radiostations and airing all around the world. But this time Michael didn't go the beaten track. He engaged new producers, composers (I want to highlight Teddy Riley and Bill Bottrell - those two wonderful songwriters without whom Jackson would still be singing old Quincy Jones-produced songs from Off The Wall - it's a pity that they weren't engaged during the work on Invincible, though, Teddy Riley worked on several tracks) to create the new sound and enter the 90s as a renewed King. He created a unique, original, magnificent album which is essentially an example of how the best records in the history are made. The videos for Dangerous feature a galaxy of celebrities engaged by MJ to work on his clips. Among them: Michael Jordan, Eddie Murphy, Naomi Campbell and Iman.

The album starts with a groovy, upbeat song and one of the future singles, Jam. It's well produced and has some stiff drums loop and wonderful glass breaking intro. I like it a lot, especially the lyrics. "Nation to nation all the world must get together face the problems that we see then maybe somehow we can work it out". It's about global problems, relationships and our perception of life. Rap's not that great here, but it always embellishes MJ's vocals.

Why You Wanna Trip On Me develops the idea proposed on Jam. It has the best production and really booms the audience with its wonderful guitar intro. The chorus is catchy and the vocals are well arranged (I always say that Michael Jackson's the best in arranging his songs), especially, on the background. MJ appeals here to his rivals shouting at them "Stop trippin'" We keep on with In The Closet, the first 6min giant. It resembles Ghosts in some ways, but has a really catchy and melodic chorus, one of those that MJ would stick to for a long time. The song's about love that should be kept secret. Very sensual and sexy.

She Drives Me Wild is another highlight, that I believe, should have been a perfect third single. Though I don't always get the lyrics, I like the nice sound and the great chorus. "She's composition, she's statistical fact" Can anybody tell me what's this all about?

Anyway, Remember The Time, the 5th track and the second single, is a 100% radio hit, which it was. Composed by Jackson / Riley team and perfectly produced by Teddy Riley. A dance hit and would just fit to listening while hanging with friends to shake them a little. I Can't Let Her Get Away is nice. It flows good, but, again, too long not to say more. Great for partying and driving, though, the desire to push the 'next track' button is getting stronger when you hear that 'I Can't Let Her Get Away' line for the hundredth time.

Heal The World, the first sweet ballad about children. It's very expressive and clear, and has got the best vocal arrangements on the album. MJ succeeded in composing such kinds of songs and, to be perfectly honest, he's one of the best composers up to date. The follow-up, Black Or White, the first single and one of the best songs on the album. It has everything in it: rhythm, great guitar and drums loops, rap, perfectly blended in the song. Besides, it has another advantage: it's not too long by comparison with the other tracks. I also want to remember that wonderful 11-min video featuring Michael reproducing the instincts of a panther.
Who Is It is another expressive, sad and somewhat mysterious song. It would the best second single and is much more original than Remember The Time. This is one my favorite MJ songs ever. And the video was perfectly made reflecting the mood of the song. Give In To Me is another highlight that can overshadow the majority of perfect rock'n'roll ballads by Aerosmith, Guns'n'Roses and Bon Jovi. This one is great, though, it's the first try of MJ to represent pure rock'n'roll in his music.
Will You Be There is one of the fans' favorite. The melody is rather simple, but all these choir performances, perfect vocal arrangements and those unforgettable words in the end of the track prove just one thing - Michael Jackson touches you to the bottom of your heart in this song. "I'll never let you part for you always in my heart" he says, and you believe him.
Fans seldom remember about the 12th track, Keep The Faith. This song was written by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garret, the team who worked on Man In the Mirror from Bad. Yes, this track's corny and sugary, but it's one of my personal MJ favorites. You know, when I hear all those truisms like "Give yourself a chance" or "Believe in yourself no matter what it's gonna take" I'm almost ready to believe that "my confidence will win out". The song's a little bit out-dated but that's why I like it so much.
Gone too soon is a very strange song. It's very short and seems to be somewhat incomplete. I'm not very fond of it, it's an average slow ballad.
The last and the title track, Dangerous, is the best one. Although, the track lasts almost 7 minutes, it doesn't make an impression that it's too long. I adore this track and consider it to be the true MJ-classics. (Especially sung live).
Well, I rate this album a five and would rate a six if there was such grade. Exemplary album and one of the best in music history.
