Author's Review
From the arcades of the Japan, to your own room, this game has traveled a very long way. With new songs and a new edit mode, it becomes almost better than the arcade. Play DDR without wasting all of your money.
Features--
Dance Dance Revolution-- It consists of the same system that was used in arcades. Stand on the dance pad and watch the screen. You can choose from over 50 songs and dance your way to unlocking much more in game mode. once you choose a song, watch the arrows go up the screen and dance away. The system is easy to learn, but difficult to master. A series of arrows move up the screen and you try to hit that arrow at the same moment it hits its mark. If you do it correctly, you'll look good doing it. Eventually, you can fancy up your moves a bit and take your act on the road. There are DDR competitions that rely more on your act than your show.
Dance Pads-- (Dance pads are purchased seperately for about $30) To fully enjoy DDR, purchase a dance pad. If you want to play with your friends, buy two. The dance pad is an ingenius piece of technology. The pad consists of 8 main buttons (arrows and the other buttons) and most have more than that. You can use your feet to play instead of the controller.
Scoring-- There are 5 different scores you can recieve for each note. They are as follows in order of how good they represent starting from worse to best, boo, almost, good, great, and perfect. If you continuously get greats and perfects for more than 4 notes, the number keeps adding up for each note you do correctly and the highest you get that number is your max combo. The stats that show up are the number of each score you got and the max combo.
Ratings-- You get rated on all of the songs you do in any mode other than lesson mode. The ratings start at D (the worst) and go up to AA (all perfects.) If you get all greats/perfects you get an A. C is borderline for Game and Solo modes.
Game types--
Normal- Normal DDR using one pad.
Versus*- Play against your friends in two player.
Double*- Play using a special routine in which you use both pads. Not all songs have a double routine but you can always make one in edit mode.
6 panel- Play a special routine that uses one pad, but uses the X and O for diagnols.
*- Requires two dance pads.
Game modes-- The following are the different modes of gameplay and their descriptions--
Game/Solo mode-- Play 3 songs of DDR in 5 different catagories. Choose your catagory in the beginning and then choose from a certain list of songs. They play at full speed and if you successfully complete them with a C or above you have some records and maybe you'll unlock a new song. In these modes, you can play NON-STOP mode, which allows you to play a certain number of songs censecutively.
Workout mode-- This one is new in Konamix. You enter your weight and you can play to find out how many calories you are burning. It has different modes that have different difficulties and keeps track of the calories lost, even through multiple songs.
Training mode-- Having trouble on a new song? Slow it down in training mode and try it out. You can't get a record or unlock a song in training mode, but you can practice or play in two player against your freinds. You can slow it down, but you cannot speed it up. If your having trouble with a certain part, you can simply practice on that part only. Also, in training mode, you can pick from all the songs so its better for multiplayer.
Lesson mode-- If you've never played DDR before, or need to brush up n some skills, go to Lesson mode. There are three different lessons that consist of 8 sections. The first 7 lessons show you how to do certain steps and then you have to try it twice. If you do it good enough, it is completed. Then, if you've done the first 7 sections successfully, you can do section 8 which is a test. It combines all of the things you have learned that section. When you complete that, you are ready to go out and play DDR!
Edit mode-- This is a new feature of Konamix. You can now make your own routines for any game type. They go with any normal song and can be used in almost any mode. You can even dance on the pad and make it off of your own dance.
Non-stop order-- Edit the order in which your non-stop songs are played.
Records-- View your records and bests from the songs that you have played in Game or Solo mode. It shows all of the different game types and includes, score and max combo. You can also view a diary of your calories lost in workout mode.
