Author's Review
Like most people, I was searching for the perfect gift to get my family this Christmas. Again, like most, I don't have a ton of cash to spend. Instead of purchasing a computer, trampoline or trip to the Bahamas, I decided that I would buy a DVD player.
Although computer savvy, I am not very up on the DVD. Sure, I watch lots of movies but my severely nearsighted eyes have difficulty distinguishing print on the screen. I would never be able to determine if a DVD is particularly clearer than a VHS.
Okay, you caught me. That's not what I bought it for anyway. I bought it because I hate rewinding movies. Likewise, I had noticed that you can purchase DVD's for about the same as a VHS and get all kinds of other features with them such as different languages, cut scenes and trailers.
After consulting with the local video expert at Costco, I decided on the Philips. According to him, this DVD has the best functions. It will play a variety of encoded disks and is almost foolproof.
To date, I am not up much on the different format of disks it will play but it does seem to play my nightly Blockbuster acquisitions beautifully.
Likewise, the on-screen functions are pretty easy to understand. If you read the book that is. My only complaint would be that the technical writer who wrote the instruction manual must not get out of the house very often. Instructions that are very simple are explained in language that is painfully complex.
Pricewise, this particular DVD seemed on par with the others that I had looked at but seemed to have a little more with the different format playability.
Of course I love my new DVD player. I no longer have to rewind my movies!
