Author's Review

The unit I purchased was 399.00 and was made in China (AVOID UNITS MADE ELSEWHERE). Quality of recordings is excellent. Easy one touch recording. Automatically builds its own Menu and chapters when recording (all you have to do is title). I would recommend looking for the Chinese units. The quality of manufacturing is very good and users manual supplement came in the box (this was very helpful). I believe the product is a very high quality product offered at a very attractive price. Philips also makes another more expensive model DVDR-80. The only significant difference between the two is the addition of an 8 hour mode. I could not justify the price difference since the picture quality in an 8 hour mode is so poor (I would never use this mode). Contrary to what you may have read in some other reviews, the DVDR75 does record in 2 channel dolby digital and does have a time-base corrector. Remote control is very basic and could be better. Maybe in the next generation they will improve the remote. I also would like to help others comparing this model to another Philips model: DVDR72. This unit is not on the Philips website and is only sold by a handful of large discount retailers (Costco and Walmart). It is basically the same unit except for one major difference. It only offers 4 recording modes instead of 6. I could have purchased the DVDR72 for 50.00 less at Costco ($349.00) but opted to pay the extra $50.00 to have a 2 hour mode and a 3 hour mode. These two modes are not on the DVDR 72 and are the modes I use the most (2 hour mode offers the same quality as a pre-recorded DVD). 3 hour mode is the same as Super VHS. Blank DVD's are widely available at $1.00 or less, I would recommend using the 2hour, 2 1/2 hour, and 3 hour modes. Conclusion: I have been very happy with my purchase and for $399.00, Its a deal !!
