Simple Setup but can't get beyond 10mb/s
Date of Review: Nov 26, 2007
The Bottom Line: If 10Mb/s or less is what you wish to achieve, these do the trick. Not sure of reliability, refunded same day.
Purchased today to compensate for wireless network's poor signal strength to one particular computer at opposite end of my new house.
Setup was simple and it worked pretty much out of the box. I changed the configuration password and encryption key immediately for both devices. Using advance settings, I also added a rule for QoS (Quality of Service) routing priorities to adopt the 802.1P rule.
I had one DHP-301 connected to the far PC and the other connected to an open port on my DLINK DI-524 (802.11g) router at opposite ends of the house.
Basic web surfing was absolutely improved over the 1Mb/s that the computer had over 802.11g wireless. But, just how much?????
Using a network speed utility on both the farthest PC (via DHP-301 device) and on a 2nd PC directly wired (RJ-45)into my DI-524 router (the router having the 2nd DHP-301 device), I observed a combined up/down stream of 10 to 11Mb/s. This was also confirmed equally when looked at the network performance tab in the Windows TASKMGRprogram. The TASKMGR network performance was showing 10% to 11% utilization over a 100Mb/s path.
I then moved the farthest PC next to the DI-524 router and hard wired it also into the router. At this point, the same 2 PC's were now both connected via wire (RJ45) into the router. I reran the network speed utility and it was showing 97Mb/s throughput. The network performance tab in TASKMGR was also showing betweem 95% to 99% utilization.
This 2nd test (both hard wired) eliminated any latency unknowns that the 2 computers could have added to the network as overhead.
Bought it today.... heading back to BestBuy to refund it today.
Make sure you purchase from a retailer that allows no hastle refunds. Also, many other reviews describe DHP-301's dying frequently. I purchased extended 2 year retail warranty for $29 just incase.
So in summary...
A) Brand new house, just built (1 month old) was getting "10Mb/s" using the DHP-301 devices
B) Network infrastructure (excluding DHP-301's) capable of sustaining "95Mb/s"
