Great Speed - Great Connection
Date of Review: Jan 9, 2005
The Bottom Line: I would definitely recommend this D-link product.
I was planning converting from DSL to cable internet and I did not want to buy a modem from Comcast at about $140.00. I finally settled on this modem for two reasons. 1. My network includes a D-link router and D-link wireless cards and I assumed that the modem would be compatible. 2. With rebates, it was only about $43.00. After I bought it, I read the reviews here only to discover that it might have a problem with Comcast right out of the box. I know I should have checked out the reviews BEFORE I bought it but I do not always do things in the proper order. Anyway, before I even called Comcast to schedule installation, I installed the firmware update from D-link that is specifically for Comcast customers. The instructions from D-link were excellent and I had the firmware updated in about 10-20 minutes.
The installation to Comcast internet went without a hitch. It picked up the signal with no problem at all and has not dropped it since (about 2.5 days now). There has been no need to reboot or anything else. As to the heat issue noted by others, it is warm but nothing out of the ordinary as far as I can tell. As for the speed, the internet is running 3-4 times as fast as my DSL. I do not know how it compares to other cable modems as I have never had another one. For specifics: using the speed test at bandwidthplace.com, I am getting readings of about 4.2 megabits/s on average; using the speed test at reviews.cnet.com, I am getting readings of about 3.2 megabits/s on average.
I am extremely happy that I did not read the reviews first because I probably would not have bought this modem. I am very happy with the modem and would recommend it to anyone.
