That's More Like It

It's always nice to have a magazine that represents the interests of one particular group, and Curve Magazine does that well by writing about topics that interest lesbian women--and topics that should interest all women. I like to think of lesbian magazines as being the kind of publication that all women's magazine's should aspire to--not necessarily the specialized information that gay women need/want to know, but the format and the level of writing.

As difficult as it is to provide one magazine that is going to appeal to an entire segment of society, Curve does a pretty good job. The editors seem to realize that the diverse group of women they serve have an equally diverse range of interests, and most are given space in various issues of the magazine.

What I find lacking in this and other like magazines is the point of view and topics of interest of college-age women. I have seen plenty of articles about lesbians in politics or in the professional world, but few written for lesbians still in school. I also find the advertising to be a little too flashy and commercial for my tastes--can't we have at least one magazine that doesn't feature skinny silicone-enhanced models on every other page without having to be overtly political? I guess not.

Overall, though, I'd recommend this magazine highly for women, gay or straight, as a decent publication. You won't find "ten ways to turn your mate on" type articles, at least not ones that take themselves too seriously, and the stories are written for adults by adults who seem to be fairly knowledgeable about the topics they are writing about, and who are able to spell. Try reading some mainstream popular magazines first and you will appreciate Curve that much more.
