Cuisinart Grind & Brew Thermal 10 Cup Automatic Coffeemaker

Date of Review: Feb 6, 2004

The Bottom Line:  Very attractive and tastefully made coffeemaker that provides a fresh cup every time.
Cuisinart Grind & Brew Thermal 10 Cup Automatic Coffeemaker DGB-600BC

Most everyone is aware of the fact that in order to have the freshest, most aromatic coffee, one must have those oils present that you can only get from a fresh grind of coffee beans. Even a less expensive bean can taste better if that oil is present. Sure you can buy a pound of ground coffee and at first it smells really great and that first pot from it taste good too but not like that of fresh ground.

The Cuisinart Grind & Brew Thermal Coffeemaker can give you all that and more. The grinder is incorporated right into the coffeemaker. You'll find it in the back to the left of the maker. All you need to do is lift the lid and remove the plastic protecting lid and add the beans. It has a heavy stainless steel blade and it will grind the beans perfectly and automatically dispense them to the awaiting basket. The head that dispenses the water over the grounds is better than most you'll find. It covers the grounds evenly and that makes for a great cup. If you do not want to grind beans you can shut the grinder off and use pre-ground coffee. You'll find the disable button on the front control panel. A basket is included with your package that is gold in color. I like them because it allows all the oils from the bean to filter into the carafe. Yum yum! Note: you can use paper filters if you prefer.

Another wonderful feature of the Cuisinart Thermal Grind & Brew Coffee Maker is the built in water filter. We have Sulphur water here that comes from our well. Even though we do have a water treatment system in place, I still like the added enjoyment the extra filter brings to our coffee. It's a charcoal filter and uses an anti-chlorine action. This makes the coffee taste smoother. You do not have to use this filter and can just be removed if you prefer not to. You'll find this filter in the reservoir. You can find them at places such as Lowes or any Cuisinart dealer. They last about 45 days for me but can last up to 60. They figure that on an average of one (1) pot per day but I make several a day so it doesn't last as long for me.

Don't want a full 10 cup pot? You can adjust the setting for 1-4 cups. Do not just put that much water in to make it cause the coffeemaker will double heat the water necessary to make a small amount and that way the small amount will taste as great as a full pot.

I really love the thermal carafe. I don't believe I'll ever go back to using a glass one. Why? Simply put, the coffee stays hot and fresh for a lengthy extended period of time. When I am by myself, I really like that. When hubby and I are drinking it goes fast and the pot never has time to get old or cold. But alone, it takes me a long time to drink it and that last cup tastes as great as the first.

On the controls you'll find a timer that you can program for up to 24 hours ahead of time for that fresh pot to brew for you. It will grind the beans and make the coffee automatically for you. The timer will turn the maker off as well. The rest of your controls such as grind, brew, etc... are located in the front control panel. It's really pretty easy to operate.

You can remove the carafe for 30 seconds before the brew cycle is complete. Be sure to put it back before time is up or you'll have a mess. Speaking from experience and mishap.

Cleaning is simple enough. Use warm soapy water to wash the carafe or keep it rinsed out and wash it once a day if you wish. The basket removes easily for clean up. Also use warm soapy water (NOT THE DISHWASHER). You can rinse in between daily washings. Use the recommended cleaner ( Durgol ) for cleaning the machine. It's what we use and have even with our Bunn.

The machine measures 15.25"'H x 7.5"W x 9.5"D. Weighs about 6 or 7 pounds. It's body is molded plastic but has the stainless steel panels. Very pretty coffeemaker. Complimentary to any kitchen. It's powered by 1025 watts and fits any regular three pronged outlet. The cord is standard size but heavy enough that I do not worry about it heating. You can get the machine in a black or white trim. We have the white.

In the package you'll receive the wire basket, a scoop, manual, coffeemaker, thermal carafe, and one water filter. You can order more through Cuisinart if you wish and they will provide sources for you.

I highly recommend that Cuisinart Grind & Brew Thermal 10 Cup Automatic Coffeemaker DGB-600BC It is actually an upgraded version of their older Grind and Brew. A much better version. As you can see, it's been around a while but without the great and much needed improvements. It's the best coffeemaker that Cuisinart has come out with in my opinion. Check it out on cuisinart.com for yourself. Cuisinart's Grind & Brew Thermal 10 Cup Automatic Coffeemaker comes with a generous three (3) year warranty.

Pros
Coffee is freshly ground, stay hot and fresh for hours. Clean up is easy.
Cons
Expensive for a home brewing machine. But the name says it all. It's worth it.
