Author's Review
I was visiting St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and had enjoyed some tasty tropical drinks with my dinners. While shopping at an island grocery, I spied Cruzan Rum Cream and picked up a bottle. I feared this might be a mistake and I would hate the stuff. Instead, it was exactly what I'd hoped for! It's like a dessert drink in a bottle - smooth, creamy, sweet, with that nice little kick. It's as if you had a caramel sundae with booze and rum on it and drank if after it melted. Again, YUM! It's kind of like Bailey's Irish Cream, a bit like a brandy Alexander made with ice cream.
The overall effect is quite sweet, so it makes a good after-dinner liqueur. It's on the verge of being too sweet, but the Irish Cream that's in it along with the rum gives it a 15% alcohol content, and the bite counteracts the sweetness. Still, overall it is very sweet, creamy, and in the category that some people think of as a woman's drink -- what the gals drink of an evening while the guys have a single-malt Scotch, neat (myself, I would opt for the Scotch some of the time, depending on my mood).
With that cream in it, I think it's probably as fattening as any drink you can buy in a bottle -- that's kind of a downside, but I wouldn't want a DIET rum cream drink, would you?
Not everyone likes this kind of drink. (I certainly do!) If you aren't in the mood for sweet and creamy, choose something else.
