Author's Review
This is an extremely fun workout DVD. I am finishing an internship in a geographical area that resembles the tundra, so actually leaving the house early in the morning to head to the gym when it is -10 degrees outside is out of the question. This is a DVD I actually look forward to putting in every time!
So you know where I am, fitness-wise, I have lost 80 pounds over the last two years through proper diet and slowly building up my exercise. I was walking on the treadmill at 4 miles per hour at varying incline levels for resistance, and truthfully...it was getting boring!
To lose these last 10 pounds, I needed to kick it up a notch, but have been disappointed by some of the videos I bought, like Tae Bo and Core Rhythms. Tae Bo was simply not my style and Core Rhythms was not getting my heart rate up and the instructors were a little annoying.
I read a good review about Cardio Salsa on a fitness website and decided to give it a try.
If you like to dance, and especially if you like to dance in the Latin styles, you will love Cardio Salsa! The instructor, Giselle, is upbeat without being annoying and the music is fantastic. There are no synthesized keyboard beats here. A professional bongo player is in the studio with the girls (and one guy - can't leave him out) and it is no wonder they look like they're having a BLAST! The instructor and music keep you interested, but I think the way the video is structured is what makes it so great.
The dances are broken down effectively, and they build off steps learned in each section. Chances are, unless you are a professional dancer, you will not be able to follow it the first time through, but don't worry about it! You can have fun and burn calories while you're learning them! Admittedly, I am more coordinated than most, and pretty much had the steps down pat by the third time. They are authentic salsa and meringue steps that are mixed with some classic aerobic moves that get (and keep) your heart rate up.
Each section features a slightly different type of dance (salsa, meringue, salsa-meringue, etc.) that build on a series of steps and movements that are all put together gradually and effectively. I had some trouble nailing the box-step combo the first time through and just recently got the hang of the moving salsa step, but it's fun nonetheless!
I seriously admit that I'm excited to put this in the DVD player every time, and I cannot say that about many videos. I have since purchased the Crunch Bikini Body (I'll do a separate review on that tough, but effective video another time) and rotate the two every other day. I figure if these two Crunch videos are good, then more will be, so I just ordered the cardio dance party as well. My body looks better now than it ever did in high school, and other than walking and some arm work with 10-lb weights, these videos are all I'm doing. Get ready for fantastic abs and legs with Cardio Salsa!
