Crochet World Magazine

Crochet World is one of the crochet/needle work magazines I buy on a semi regular basis. Most generally I buy back issues during jumble shop forays, I do not often find the magazine for sale at any of our other local shops.

Mom, one of those old fashioned ladies, envisioned dainty little girls, organdy dresses and quiet pursuits. I was about 9 when she introduced me to the lovely art of crochet. She envisioned whiling away summer afternoons with her dainty child nearby, both of us crocheting dainty somethings.

I took to crochet right away. Mom took to her bed.

What Mom got was skinned knees, pigtails until I managed to get hold of the scissors and slash them to shags, and anything but dainty. I set to crocheting with a vengeance, by the time dad got home that evening I had managed quite a set of harnesses, for lizards. They were tethered nicely to the curtain rods in the bedroom my sisters and I shared.

The cover of the latest Crochet World issue promises a nice assortment of patterns including 17 designs running the gamut of fashions, home décor, and more. Listed or pictured on the cover are: red hot valentine: dress, must make baby blanket, purse, and a toy bear.

Instructions accompanying patterns found in Crochet World are easy to follow, for those who need a little extra direction there is a stitch guide included in every magazine. The stitch guide has detailed how to for various common and some not so common stitches used for crocheting items.

A recent stack of jumble shop acquisitions has provided enough pattern material to keep me busy into my dotage with creative patterns for afghans, clothing, doilies, dolls and toys all created from readily available threads and yarns. i.e. I can get the materials at the local Walmart or Hobby Lobby.

Holiday goodies featured in various issues include: a Pineapple Poinsettia Wreath in one issue, as well as a Hanukkah pattern (sad to say, that pattern had been removed from the issue) and a Mother’s Day Centerpiece in another. Toys abound; Scruffy the pup, a Unicorn, bears, and chicks. Clothing patterns run from a Menswear-Look Pullover, to a variety of pullover and cardigan style sweaters for men and women as well as children. Vests, and hats as well as ponchos are offered. For baby there are an abundance of patterns including an especially nice a little hooded jacket with a cable design for new baby – perfect for shower gifting, and a Butterfly Filet Baby Dress for a little girl about a year or so, this pattern can easily be adjusted for a newborn and used as a christening dress for either boy or girl.

Children are sure to enjoy a Frog Pin, ladybug and bumble bee purses, bookworm book marks and a Quiet Book.

The Infant Sock Laundry Bag is easily made and will make a nice shower gift for giving at church or home showers.

The issues featuring a column by Agnes Russell are especially interesting; her designs are presented in easily followed directions. Two of the ones to catch my eye are: Pineapple Spring Blooms and Lacy-Look Sweater.

Not every pattern will suit every needle worker, however Crochet World does provide a nice assortment every other month and even the most discerning needle worker should find patterns to enjoy creating.

I like that Readers have the advantage of easy-to-understand instructions as well as full-color photos, I am an accomplished needle person, and can read directions, I still like to see the picture of the finished product as I work on a piece.

Contests, tips/techniques, and Q&A are featured along with guidelines for designing and submitting designs for possible publication. Hmmm, perhaps they can use a design for lizard harnesses.

There is advertising included, some readers may feel annoyance, however I like to see some of the ads featuring latest in threads, needles, thread storage bags and the like. I keep in mind too that the magazine would cost much more to produce were it not for the advertising.
