Product Review

Nice affordable system

by   rkaled ,   Jan 19, 2006

Pros:  Sleek design, Crisp sound

Cons:  wired remote (why bother?), not too strong on bass tones

The Bottom Line:  I recommend this system. It provides nice clear sound with a sleek design.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Nice crisp sound from this system. I bought this to replace my Karden/Harmon 'champagne glass' speakers that came with my Dell system.

I like the crisp sound of this setup. I don't hear the 'buh-buh-buh-bass' as descrbied by another reviewer, but that may be due to my previous speaker system.

After a couple of years with my previous setup, the K/H subwoofer that came with my PC began acting up. It would suddenly burst into a reverberating bass sound that could not be toned down, but by jiggling the bass knob the sound went back to normal, although the bass sounds were still prevalent. I believe that system is simply heavy on the bass tones. I became accustomed to the overbearing (and sometimes reverberating) bass tones from the other system.

I'm not big on bass tones. I prefer crisp higher tones. With that said, I can still turn the bass on this I-trigue setup up to it's maximum and still not be offended by the bass. I don't think the bass tones are very strong on this system, but for me, that's fine. I like only enough bass tones to add some depth to the sound. I don't want to rattle the walls, and therefore this system sounds great. If you're big into the bass tones, you may want to look at higher end systems.

I like the sleek design of the I-Trigue. It's slick looking just like the champagne glass speakers that I replaced. I consider the I-trigue speakers less top-heavy than the champagne glass speakers. Those tipped way too easily. The i-trigue speakers are slightly top-heavy and they will tip, but not as easily as the others that I replaced.

I don't see an issue with the wire coming from the speakers. Another reviewer complained that the wires got in the way of the speaker stand, but I don't see that. The wires from the speakers sit about an inch from the bottom of the speaker and I haven't had an issue with them being in the way.

It seems strange to me that Creative Labs added a wired remote for this speaker system. The remote has only two controls, volume (also the on/off knob) and a bass level dial. These are fine, but why didn't CL just put these controls onto one of the speakers?? The wired remote seems to be a nuisance since you have to look for the control rather than just reaching for a dial on the speaker or the woofer. The cord for the remote is also somewhat restrictive. I believe it's about 5-6 feet long, which seems fine, but again, if you have to keep it so close to the woofer, why not put these controls onto the woofer or speakers. The remote just seems to be another component to look for when needed.

All said, I am happy with this speaker setup. The sound is crisp and clear. There is plenty of bass for me, and the price is right. These were priced at $79 at Circuit City, but I caught a 50% rebate promotion, so my end cost should be $40. This is a nice set up for $40. I may not be as happy had I paid the full $79 price... so look for a deal on these if you can.
