Product Review

Simple way to decorate your discs

by   alanbweaver ,   Feb 14, 2008

Pros:  Good for small businesses with low volume requirements

Cons:  Expensive (for ink), low life expectancy (2000 disks), amortized cost .50 to print disk

The Bottom Line:  Good for small businesses with low volume requirements. Despite high cost, it is easy to use, provide custom designs on your disks.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

If you need to have professional data or image disks for your customers or clients and want to produce them quickly albeit at a higher price, this is a good system for you. It is designed for small businesses that have low volume requirements to provide disks to customers.

An indelible marker (which is what I often use!) does not look professional. Labels can gunk up the disk by loosening and not working in the computer, CD, or DVD player. Ugh!

Dymo, who is well known for labeling the world has come up with device which is definitely cool. It’s not inexpensive, costing about .40 just for the ink to print it. The ink cartridge is proprietary.

Set up to do the printing is almost like using Photoshop wherein you have layers and can use any font from your computer, along with wrapping text, adding several photos so you can have something that rivals the major media companies.

They also have stock templates that you can use which is great if you are just providing a data disk to a client. It’s attractive and quick to produce. However, if you have a skill set working with Photoshop, you’ll adapt to their program fairly quickly. In fact, you can incorporate designs from many of Adobe’s programs into their system which is a plus.

You can have fun watching the disc spin as the printer creates the disk. It’s like watching a top creating an image before your eyes.

The discs you use have an affect on quality and image durability. As you may realize, different brands provide different results. Waterproof glossy discs work good. Use the normal or best mode for a more professional look.

Cons
The printer is rated to only last for 2,000 disks which is NOT a high life expectancy. Plus when you add the cost of the ink, it is NOT inexpensive to generate the disks.

However, if the need to produce a professional looking disk with quick turnaround is a necessity for your business, this can be a good investment. If you need to produce hundreds of disks, it is suggested you subcontract this work. You’ll save not only on disk and production costs, they can use your artwork to print the disks which is a huge time saver.

It’s also a bit bulky; shaped like a big shoe. The overall size is 4.3 by 5.7 by 10.6 inches
