A good place to start

Date of Review: Mar 10, 2000

Consumer Reports does provide opinions on just about everything. They are unbiased and do their best to provide objective, consumer oriented views on products and services. They are unapologetic about their pro-consumer agenda.

The product reports are clear, concise and informational. They provide the ability to quickly compare several different types and brands of a product.

There is a down side to evaluating everything. It is hard to become experts on anything. They do what they believe to be common sense usage tests for products, as well as testing to determine safety. Those results don't always jibe with how a particular person might use a product, and those differences aren't always spelled out as clearly as they could be. People who are experts on a particular subject (roller blades for example, or lawn mowers) do disagree with their testing and recommendations, and if you are (or intend to be) a serious user of a product, Consumer Reports is a good place to start, but shouldn't be the only source of information. For good, general information it is a good source, but shouldn't be the only source.
