Good for hosting

Date of Review: Jan 27, 2001

The Bottom Line:  It is a good solid server. If you can afford it, go for it.
I am a hosting network administrator and this is the server of choice for me. So far we have had very few problems with them (I run 20 of them now). They come with SmartStart software for easy install. I have only used NT on them, but a few friends of mine run Red Hat linux without problems. I run my base servers in the following configurations: Duel 933 MHZ, 3 Gig of RAM (expandable to 4 Gig), redundant power supply, 4 drives in 2 RAID 1 arrays, and a 3200 RAID controller. They come with RAID controllers on board, but I like the 3200s, they have the ability to expand externally and seems a little more stable. The Insight Manager works well in monitoring the status of all the servers.

One of the things I don?t like about the server is each power supply uses it?s own power cord. Perhaps too much redundancy here for me, I am limited in the number of power outlets I have access to and can not use power strips.

Also, if you try and use non compaq memory, it will memory dump once you get into NT, oh well, I guess they all do that now.
