Product Review

Itsy-Bitsy Spider, Went up the Wall and Scared Her, Right into This Tent

by   badbonz0007 , top reviewer in Pets, Home and Garden at Epinions.com ,   May 15, 2008

Pros:  Durable, inexpensive, lightweight, and roomy.

Cons:  If you leave this setup to Long Sun will damage the material.

The Bottom Line:  I would highly recommend this Coleman tent to anybody, if it says Coleman it is guaranteed to be good.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I love camping, but I am not to sure about a wife. She always says that she wants to go camping with me, but I don't believe she knows what the term camping means. My idea of camping is getting a tent with a sleeping bag and going out into the wilderness of spending the night under the stars. Her idea is to get a camper-trailer with all of the special amenities inside. She says to me that she does not want to sleep on the ground were all the bugs are. I said that's part of the camping life, plus catching some fish and throwing it on an open grill. And she says to me, what about when we have to go to the bathroom. Well, that's when I tell her you have to find a forked tree, and some real soft leaves and a ravine. And I will let you picture the rest of that, I will not describe it don't worry. That is when I decided to go to Gander Mountain and find a tent and surprise her. I came home on a Friday and had this large package over my shoulder and said let's go honey. She looked at me with that disturbed look on her face, and said to me you have got to be kidding. I said nope, we are going camping now get your shirt and pants on, so that we don't scare the wildlife. This particular tent is made by Coleman and only cost about $40.

Description
This particular tent comes in many different colors. I have seen them in blue and white, blue and green, or all bluish green. It is approximately 7' x 5' in diameter. When dry, this tent weighs approximately 8 pounds, and when folded up. It will be approximately 2' x 6" in diameter. This tent has only one room and has a complete floor, and a rain fly that covers the whole dome part of a tent. It also has a couple of open mesh areas for ventilation, the heat will raise to the top of the tent and out the windows. This also will create a draft if you leave the front door open. In the very center of this dome tent the height will reach 48 inches. Where the front door is, it is actually two layers, one layer of a mesh, and the other is of the tent material, just incase it starts raining you have a way to keep out the rain. This tent also comes with fiberglass poles, unlike the aluminum metal ones and other tents.

Features
There are several features about this dome tent that you should know about. The poles that you use to set this up with are shock-corded poles. These are better than the regular poles, because the regular poles are just straight solid poles that you fit into the end of each other. Another nice feature, with the addition of the mesh around the window and door for ventilation, is that you have places inside such as little pockets that you can store flashlights and other such small gear in. Other features that come with this tent, is a heavy-duty mat. You have privacy Windows, plus sleeves for the poles to slide through, pins and rings, and the ever revolutionary instant clips. They also give you a separate storage bags for your actual tent and a different bag for your poles and stakes. Everything about this attempt is waterproof, you have water resistant fabric, waterproof floors, the seams are also sealed to be leak-free and they invert the floor seams so that all of the thread holes and needle holes are covered to make sure that there are no leaks. All of the zippers are protected against any inclement weather. They have actually giving you an extra flap that will overlap on the zipper to make sure that there is no leakage. Another addition to this is the fact that they have put this tent in a wind machine to make sure that the poles and the anchors can handle very strong winds. Coleman has also tested this in their specially built rain room to make sure that there is no leaks before you get your own tent.

Assembly and Durability
When I finally got my wife out into the wilderness, (just to let everyone out there know, that she does not like any kind of bugs, spiders, or any of those creepy crawly things) she even experienced a dragonfly trying to carry her away. But don't tell her I told you that. The main reason that I bought a tent of this size was because, one it was cheaper, and two are like spending my quality time with my better half. I figured that if I got a small enough tent that, well, I'll just let your imagination run wild. This tent is very durable. We have had it for a couple of years and spent many a night's in it. I still remember the first time that we use this and I ask for her help to set it up. Boy, oh boy, was that a mistake. It was only supposed to take five to 10 minutes to set this up. But, a little piece of advice to all the other guys out there that want to take their wife camping and that is, send them on a twig hunt. That way you can actually have this set up in five minutes. Basically, all you do is lay the tent out on the ground, with the door facing whatever way you want to, stake the corners of the tent down and then assemble all of the poles inserting the poles diagonally forming an X. Then all you do is insert one and of the pole into the corner pin and then go to the other side and insert the other end of the same pole watch you do this you will notice that will be making an arch. Then repeat this for the other pole that is left and that is all there is to it. This will basically give you the shape of your dome, and all that is left is to go around and connect all of your frame clips to the poles. By this time, you should have the basic shape of your dome tent; the last thing that is left is to attach the rain fly, which is basically a big tarp that covers the whole tent. All of these materials are water resistant and fire retardant, and the whole tent is actually covered with a polyethylene to help the resist bad weather.

Warnings
A couple of points that you should know about camping in a tent, and that is sometimes water droplets will form on the inside of your tent, this is not leakage. This could be caused by the temperature difference from the inside of your tent to the outside weather. This will cause condensation on the inside of your tent walls. Plus, make sure that you try your tent out before storing it. If you do not dry it out, the next time you open it up, you will have mold on all of the walls. A couple of other little warnings that she might not know about and that is, never pull up on the tent corners when you're taking it down, pull the stakes out by hand. The other thing is that try not to leave this tent set up for long periods of time because the sun will beat down on it and will actually damage the material of the tent.

Warranty
Coleman has been around for years, and they do have a warranty on this tent. But after using their tents for years I have never had to take one back to enforce the warranty. They've always stood up to Mother Nature. I have never had one week, or pay her due to manufacturers defect.

Conclusion
After using all kinds of Coleman lanterns and tents and just about any kind of camping supplies, you can trust the name Coleman. If it says Coleman on it, it will probably be the last one that you have to buy unless you need more supplies. I would highly recommend this particular tent, just tell your wife that there is raccoons or possums or even little spiders outside and she will stay in it the whole day.
