Author's Review
Why I got this product:
The only reason I got it is, to send it out of the country to my niece & nephew so that they can watch the region specific collection of Cartoon/Discovery/NGC DVDs I got them and also because of its extremely light weight. Coby DVDs have a plenty of hacks to make them region-free. Here is my review:
Out of the Box:
The box included the DVD player, remote, RCA/Composite cable and user manual. The box itself is extremely light, black face plate & a silver body. The shipping weight was just 4.7 lbs. It looks good. A friend of mine thought it was a SONY, the COBY written on the front looks very much like SONY. The user manual is small but covers all the functions of the DVD player.
Build & Picture quality:
The build quality is very poor, but I guess you cant complain if you paid $33 for it. The remote is a credit-card remote, meaning it is like small, with the basic media control functions & power on/off. Looks very cheap, but again the price factor. The DVD player looks like it is made of cheap plastic with a shiny black front. This is the first DVD player I ever saw that comes with a mechanical toggle switch, usually you find an electronic switch. So if the switch is depressed in, you know it is powered on (there is an LED too) Now for the picture quality, well, I must say, it is way better than I expected. It is a progressive scan DVD player & it does show. The picture quality is not the best, but it is definitely close to very good. The remote controls all the features/functions offered by the DVD player. Connections are easy. It has component, S-video and composite output. I tried the component & it is good.
Who should buy it:
If you are looking for an inexpensive player with very good picture quality with a small footprint and you dont care for the brand name, this is for you. The progressive scan picture quality is very good for the price, and makes an excellent choice for a low priced DVD player.
