With the Dreamcast hardware lowered to around 80 bucks, you can find a lot of software cheap. When Coaster Works came out, it was priced around $30. But when I saw it for $20, I've grabbed it.
Most people love riding roller coaster. And I bet most people in the back of their mind wanted to build a bigger and scarier one.
Well, in Coaster Works you can. It is easy to get into. There are only 6 stages. The first stage is a tutorial. And each stage after that lets you build bigger and better coasters after you master each level. The 6th and last level is a sandbox a la Railroad Tycoon type where you are not restricted in gravity, number of pieces, etc. Although the area to build in is larger, you are still restricted in height.
Once you have reached the 6th level, you can build your dream coaster pretty much. Loops, screws, turns, almost anything you want. The fun part is riding it and watching your "ride" in different views. And if you build it right, you almost have the illusion of riding in a real coaster.
The graphics of the game is pretty good. 3.5 out of 5. I wish there was more details and outside rides you can see. Don't get me wrong, you have some scenery of some rides, but wouldn't it be neat to see other coasters in the background?
What would make this game even better is to be able to add tunnels, riding the coaster at night (image all the lighting effects), wooden frame, more different types of cars, unlimited height, bigger playing field and underground construction.
This game doesn't last long. But for $20, it's worth it. And any time you get an itch to build another coaster, you can just pop the disc in and build to your heart content. Bring back those childhood days of erector sets, leggos and tonka trucks.
