To BLUSH or not to BLUSH?
Although I am a self-proclaimed makeup fanatic, I?ve never been a big user of blush or rouge products. I was lucky to have been blessed with good cheekbones, and a relatively healthy skin-tone, so for a long time, I tended not to use blusher unless I was feeling a tad pale or under the weather.
But even on those rare occasions that I would opt to wear blush, I was seldom pleased with the results. So often the colors were fake looking ? too pink, too red, too orange. In addition, many times the colors were shiny ? millions of little particles of mica are added to many blushers on the market today, and although they are intended to add a little ?glow? to one?s complexion, to me, it seems to only add to the artificial effect.
So where on earth was I going to find a high-quality, natural looking, matte-finish blush?
Enter Clinique?s Soft-Pressed Powder Blusher!
Some years ago, I had gotten a small Blush ?mini? in one of those ?Gift with Purchase? bags Clinique has so often. I remembered that the color was good, it had a matte-finish, and was oil free. So when my search for the perfect blusher was not turning up roses, I went to the mall, and headed straight for the Clinique counter.
Clinique carries three varieties of blusher: a compact/cream formula, a sheer pressed-powder formula, and the one I chose - Soft Pressed-Powder Blusher. The color selection is impressive ? 10 shades, ranging from barely-there to bright. I selected a soft, warm peachy tone called ?Honey Blush.? On my light olive skin, I find this shade perfect for giving my natural color a little boost! The color sweeps on easily and evenly when used with a full, fluffy brush (I use a larger brush intended for loose face powder). I was so thrilled with the results I got from this product, I went out a few months later and bought another one ? this time I selected a darker, beige-based color called ?Totally Tawny.? This color is perfect for winter months, when darker clothing and makeup colors are predominant.
Final Thoughts
Each Clinique pressed-powder blusher comes in a mirrored compact with an applicator brush. However, I recommend investing in a good, fluffy make-up brush with a longer handle, and better quality bristles. I find that the brush included in the compact gathers up too much color, which when applied, will appear as a sharp stripe along your cheekbones. So just toss that little brush, or keep it only for emergencies!
Due to the slightly oily tendencies of my skin, I find that powder blushers work best on my skin. However, those with dry skin, or combination skin with dry cheeks, may find that they have better luck either with a creamier formulation, or if they first prep their skin with a good moisturizer, or moisturizing foundation. However, for those with normal and oily skin, this is a great product. It?s oil-free, low-shine formula wears well all day with no touch ups. I have never encountered any problems with streaking or running, and the colors are very true to life.
