Given the time, a good text

Although I don’t have much experience when it comes to other texts, I found Moore’s to be a good starting point for studying.
While the text is long and perhaps excessive, I found that if I read it and paid attention enough to understand it, I could get a lot of information out of the book. The “blue boxes” of clinical correlates were particularly helpful when it came to understanding the material. The lay out, once I became accustomed to it, also turned out to be a plus. I learned what parts of each section I needed to pay close attention to and which were less important. The text also had good comprehensive tables which I found to be very helpful. These usually summarized the text allowing me to skip some of the reading.
Some of the drawbacks of the book are its length. The chapters on the extremities, while good were excessive. Also, the pictures they use (from Grant’s) are not very good or clear. Most of the newer images are very nice but you pretty much had to turn to Netter’s for a lot of the older pictures. I also found the text to be less than informative in several sections. In these cases I had to turn to outside sources to get the information to understand whatever concept I was supposed to be learning (this was true certainly for the nervous system which is never fully explained). This fact is surprising since the text is so big, but a large portion of it is geared towards clinical correlates sometimes leaving the basics out.
If you’re not interested in spending a lot of time reading then Chung’s is defiantly the way to go, but if you want clear explanations of most concepts and a good collection of tables, use Moore.
