Pretty Amusing

Citizen Ruth is the story of a woman, Ruth Stoops, who is a junkie and is constantly in trouble with the law. She has a problem with huffing spray paint and has two children who live with her brother. After being picked up for the umpteenth time and discovering she is once again pregnant, the judge gives her an ultimatum, have an abortion or go to jail. While in jail, she meets a group of women who have been arrested for protesting. They learn of her story and immediately take her in.
The story gets a little crazy after this. On one hand there's the pro-lifers who are doing everything in their power to get Ruth to keep her baby. And there's the pro-choice group who tell Ruth that she should do whatever she feels, but above that are arranging for the abortion. Ruth is definitely a character. I find myself watching this movie over and over because I honestly find it a hilariously stab at a major issue.
Laura Dern stars as Ruth. Mary Kay Place, Swoozie Kurtz, Burt Reynolds, Kurtwood Smith, and Kelly Preston co-star.
