Author's Review
A co-worker and good friend of mine one day told to me check out something called "Chu-Chu Rocket". I laughed at the title! I had no clue to what he was talking about!! But since we do share a great common interest for Japanime and all console video games, I knew it had to be one of the two.
About a week later, my roommate and I were shopping and stumbled across a videogame magazine with a demo disc that included the game. We took it home and was I amazed!!
If you're like me, you don't read the instructions till after you're familiar with the game. It was hard to figure it out at first, but within a few minutes I knew what to do. The learning curve is generally high for this game. But the fun factor is maniacal and quite frantic!! The sound effects and coloring all appeal to the Japanese style, which is still quite impressible here in the US.
The whole game consists of a leading the mice to a way out. There are cats who chase after them and holes that the mice can fall into. But the way the cats and mice run are 'tracked'. Before you initiate them to run, they are sitting in one spot facing a direction...either up, down, left, or right. You have options of setting 'direction changing' blocks down.
The whole idea is to get the mice into the rocket before they are either eaten by the cats, make sure they do not fall into holes, or before the cats get to the rocket....just your basic escape plan.
The multi-player feature has more options!! It can have up to 4 players, in which you have to save the most mice. A lot of 'power ups' are similar to the old "Arkanoid/Breakout" game. Some pieces make more mice appear, there is turbo, and even switching blocks that make the game very pacing.
Regardless, this game till have you glued to the tube. At times, you will be frustrated, and others you'll be relieved. Overall this is highly addictive!! I'm really impressed at this release because a lot of games today are your usual 3D environment while this comes out as pure clean fun!
